Chaos rocks Olympus Mons
A new monarch must rise – but she does not stand alone!
As the celebration of the victory at Legatus cools, a shuttle accident claims the lives of the Mage-King of Mars and his heir. The Crown and the Mountain fall to the Mage-King’s daughter, sixteen-year-old Kiera Alexander. She recalls Damien Montgomery, her father’s First Hand, to stand as her Lord Regent.
The pair are unprepared to govern but are thrust into the heart of Protectorate politics as the Mage-King had left behind everything from an unfinished war to an incomplete new Constitution.
Even as they get a handle on the list Kiera’s father left them, Damien is grimly certain of one thing: when it comes to the deaths of Kings, he doesn’t believe in accidents.

There are a few things that are absolutely wrong, for example in the description of the book Kiera loses both her father and her brother. Yet she still is there waving to crowds, smiling, even at the funeral. I know it's a science fiction fantasy novel, but that's not even legitimately plausible.
I sincerely hope that the author does a better job on the next book in the series, however I doubt I will read it as this has put me completely off.

Note: I received a free electronic copy in exchange for an unbiased review (but liked it enough to buy a copy anyway)

As a real fan of the series and author and having read all of Stewart's work, I feel this book is incomplete. Great writing and everything as page turning as before I.e. the 3 stars - but it fundamentally felt like a placeholder, the first half of a book that may have been churned out to hit a date rather than being properly completed.
I know that is the model everyone goes for now and e-readers allow it to happen, but I'm getting frustrated with 10-15 short books for every series. A few hours of light reading every 6 months isnt enough I'm afraid. This is made even worse as in my opinion many of Stewart's other works buck this trend and are more complete stories in their own right..
A shame.
