"It's not like there are no other cookbooks for children on the market, but what makes My First Cookbook a standout is its production by a publisher who not only tests all recipes to present the best version, but explores the testing process and why that recipe works better than others. This cookbook differs from adult collections, though, in that it focuses on preparation equipment and methods as much as the recipe itself, walking kids ages 5-8 through the process of each of 60 recipes that encourage math and science knowledge, kitchen skills development, and knowledge about ingredient choices... Lovely contemporary color photos of kids in the kitchen make for a collection that is further vetted by thousands of kid testers, making for a 'best of the best' collection that should indeed be the first cookbook a parent gives to a child." -- Children's Bookwatch

Most cookbooks are written for 8yo+, its so nice to have a cookbook written for younger kids.
This cookbook does a good job at explaining the steps through pictures.
My daughter can’t read yet, but she knows what the next step is going to be based on the picture.
We have other kid cookbooks and they have a joke or an area to write the kid’s thoughts about the recipe - this cookbook doesn’t have that. It does have a fun fact associated with each recipe - so that’s nice.
There is also plenty of white space on each recipe page that we are able to write in our personal notes.
My daughter has marked the recipes she wants to make first out of the cookbook - there are a ton!
I really like that the nutritional information for each recipe is included in the back of the book - this is an important lesson to teach the kids and goes along nicely with the cookbook.
I think its great that there is an assortment of recipes in this book - snacks, meals, dessert.
This cookbook has some tasty recipes that are not hard to make.
If someone is not a great cook at all and just wants to try some recipes - no matter the age, this is a great cookbook to start with.
I really like that the recipes are not all just hotdogs and Mac & cheese - they have recipes from different cultures and holidays.
That does mean that some recipes call for ingredients that are not found in a standard pantry.
I like that the recipes have an indicator (Ribbon) letting you easily know the difficulty of each recipe.
It would be nice if there was some sort of index in the back based off the ribbon difficulty for a quick reference.
I found it very interesting that working with raw meat is only considered a mid difficulty.
I still don’t let my daughter touch raw meat - but because of this book I think I might let her do it sooner than I was planning.
The time given for each recipe is that as if an adult is making the recipe.
Keep that in mind when your child is doing it or helping with it - you will need more time.
The cook times seem to be pretty accurate, I’ve had to add some time but they do a good job of telling you what you need to check for when it’s done.
Overall a great cookbook with great recipes and instructions.
I’ve been cooking for years and haven’t tried to make some of these recipes - can’t wait to make them for the first time with my daughter!
