About the Author

I've enjoyed writing as long as I can remember and at the age of seven produced my first magazine, selling it to my friends for one old penny. Several decades later I became a real magazine editor and went on to sell short stories and features on a regular basis to national magazines. I come from quite a creative family (five generations of theatre and circus gymnasts, trapeze artists, singers, musicians and songwriters) but I'm rubbish on a trapeze, I can't sing or dance or even crack a joke without forgetting the punchline. However, I am a painter and art tutor, and most of all I love to write, so I hope some of you out there will be able to pass a happy hour with one or more of my books. Joy Wodhams is the author of eleven novels for adults, young adults and middle range children, two short story collections and a manual on creative writing.

Influences:

Her beloved birthplace (Liverpool, England) is the setting for two of her books, ME, DINGO AND SIBELIUS. about an ugly duckling and an inheritance, and THE BOY WHO COULD FLY, which relates to travelling circuses during World War Two and which was also prompted by her own circus ancestry.

Another book, CABBAGE BOY, a tragi-comic novel for young adults, is about a mutant and its protector, and was prompted by an extraordinary change in local farming methods.

Her current best seller is THE MYSTERY OF CRAVEN MANOR for children from 9 to 14 years.

Her newest releases are THE GIRL IN THE ATTIC, an emotional supernatural thriller about damaged relationships, and THE BOY WITH MY FACE, in which a lonely 13-year-old discovers he has a Doppelganger..

Also now available is HOW TO WRITE FICTION, a comprehensive guide for would-be writers, which puts together her teachings over nearly three decades as a Creative Writing Tutor.

It's absolutely absorbing and fabulous book. Good for 12 year olds. When I read it, I was actually entralled by storylin. The vocbulary is not that good good but still this book is a must.

Very good book with an engaging plot. My 9 year old really enjoyed it and so did I.

HOWEVER, it is riddled with typos and ridiculous errors such as speech marks inverted, upside down apostrophes and double full stops! These occur so frequently that it seriously detracts from the story itself.
Might have been wise to have someone proof read the book before it was published!

I haven’t read this book, as it was bought for a gift, and when it arrived the publishing style was noticeably “cheaper” than for the other children’s fiction books I had ordered with it. The last page of the book says “Printed in Poland by Amazon Fulfillment”, so this is obviously some new venture for them, and I think they should be honest and state this is the case in the description.

I have decided to return the book, and buy one by a known publisher which looks better quality to give as a gift.

Craven Manor is a great book overall. Like most of Joy’s books it has its nice, calm moments, and parts of it where you want to cry as it has a back story as to why it was written.

I’ve really enjoyed all of Joy’s books that I have read, and this one is particularly good because the characters’ emotions are portrayed in a way that make you want to feel them as well.

I highly recommended this book as well as others she has written, like Cabbage Boy, because of the sense they give to the reader. Joy is a brilliant author who portrays emotions through characters and back story.
