5.0 out of 5 starsMagical!!

‘We’ve got great architecture,’ he continued. ‘Lovely restaurants. Reasonably reliable public transport. The climate’s great – cold in winter, not-cold in not-winter. Much as you’d expect. Oh, and the beaches! The beaches.’ He looked thoughtful. ‘The beaches are rubbish, actually, but you can’t have everything.’

If you are looking for a fun, light yet engrossing read, go for this one. The imagination in the book is fascinating. There is humour in the writing style. The attention to detail in the world building is impeccable.

So glad I picked this book. I enjoyed my time reading it.

1.0 out of 5 starsBoring in the middle, Harry Potter rip-off, great climax
Reviewed in India on 10 March 2019
It is well-written but I got extremely bored till the climax came along. The similarities to Harry Potter are unending.... and after a point get irritating... I liked the idea of the trials (though that may have been inspired by the Hunger Games!!) and the writing is actually very good and Jessica Townsend evokes some great images. The worlds she creates are never as complete, credible or satisfying as the world of Harry Potter, but then, not everyone is JK Rowling...
Honestly, four stars for the writing but one star for all the hype and for borrowing ideas from Harry Potter...

Majority of the book is so slow, I didn’t find myself gripped to the story at all and I kept putting down for a while. Middle grade is usually a genre that I find fun and gripping and an easy read, I usually fly through it. I found the last 70-80 pages were the best part of the entire novel, the story picked up and was actually interesting for a bit.

The writing style is just meh? Nothing particularly great about it, the story itself was pretty flat and wasn’t very unique or creative. I don’t understand the praise surrounding this book at all…
The ending/ final trial was a complete cop-out, in my opinion. Left me pretty damn disappointed. The ‘plot twists’ were just meh, nothing shocking.

The world itself was the most interesting part, in my opinion, Nevermoor seems like such a weird and wonderful place. I am interested in knowing more about it so I really hope the next book has more worldbuilding.

Nice beginning, some nice characters, but... Strange pace, sometimes rushed, sometimes slow.
Overall, there were things I liked, but mostly I was bored. And it's very predictable.
I think this book needed much-much more professional editing. Nice, but nothing special for me, sorry.

3.0 out of 5 stars Un peu long mais bel univers

Well written but the characters were formulaic and gave the reader nothing new. The magical elements were borrowed from better works. Overall, there just wasn't much originality. Will not be reading the 2nd in the series.

Para un libro de este estilo, me resultó un poco lento a ratos. Es imaginativo y la idea es buena, pero algo más de ritmo le iría bien

I almost gave up and did not finish it, the character and plot development was too slow for me. The magic system did not impress me so much, but I did have favorite characters. It did finally pick up and showed promise towards the end but then it is a series and I will be reading the next one to find out what happened.
