The New Annotated Frankenstein Kindle Edition
A cornucopia of background information. . . . Teachers will be delighted to have this material in one volume. Students will find the notes illuminating. General readers will be fascinated to uncover the many layers behind the writing of Shelley’s novel. . . . Klinger’s edition allows readers to understand the complexities of the novel as well as the difficulties endured by its author. Only then can one be truly inspired by Mary Shelley’s genius and her bravery.—Charlotte Gordon, Washington Post
A gorgeous, compelling, and simply fascinating volume just in time for the 200th anniversary of its source material’s publication. Klinger does not presume to add to the comprehensive body of scholarship on Shelley’s novel; he wants to illuminate the original text itself and showcase how complex and engaging it was—and still is. . . .The resulting volume will find a huge audience in libraries, from amateur scholars to students to genre fans. Klinger has not only given us a useful reference work but he has also reminded us all just how fun Frankenstein still is to just read. —Becky Spratford, Booklist, Starred review
In annotating Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Les Klinger has pulled off the nearly impossible trick of making the original novel as interesting as the phenomena (from the many incarnations of the monster to the field of science fiction) which it spawned. A beautifully illustrated compendium of Frankensteinian facts and information. —Neil Gaiman
With the mind of a mad scientist and the heart of a voluptuary, Leslie S. Klinger has been striding through Sherlock Holmes and masterpieces of Fantastica for years now, illuminating, enlightening, clarifying, and amusing as he went. On the subject of Mary Shelley and Frankenstein, Klinger surrounds and supports the famous novel with a thousand touches of scholarship and wit. He has done us all an immense service. —Peter Straub
What a marvelous book! Klinger's deep research and knowledge of his subject shines through this entertaining and fascinating insight into Mary Shelley, her life and times, and the themes and vast impact of her earth-shaking novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. —John Landis
A stunning one-stop emporium of all things Frankenstein, a standout volume even in the limitless sea of editions of this book.—Steve Donoghue, Open Letters Monthly --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I have never owned an illustrated collectors edition of any book in my whole life so when I decided to finally fix that I knew it had to be something not only a thing of beauty but also worth the money I was spending and this book delivered and some.
Now the thing about these types of books is there not really the best way if you want to just read the book like it's huge and bulky but still worth every penny or in my country dollars, I spent on it. The best way to approach this book is more like a reference to another compact copy of Frankenstein so you have the go-to copy that you can read anywhere and pretty much toss in a bag and not care if it gets damaged then you have this copy that you read when you're wanting to get some more background information and look at the beautiful illustrations.
Let's me expand on what I mean by "background information" this book has loads and loads of annotations that take up the sides of every single page and there very well written and informative which is great and very helpful for someone who might be studying the book for school or a course. The best bit by far it's the illustrations I was seriously in wow over how amazing they are and the little details in some had been looking at the one picture for ages there a work of art I would go as far to say this whole book it's a work of art that should be on display somewhere in an art gallery.
Now I do have some cons and the first one isn't a fault of the author or anyone who wrote the book it's was a misunderstanding on my part. You see every time I saw this book in my local book store it always had a dust jacket protector case on it and I thought when I ordered my copy from Amazon I believed it would come the same. It didn't and that upsets me because I worry the dust jacket will get damaged guess I'll have to be a bit more careful in future.
My only other con is and this might sound weird but two of the extra things included here:
- The introduction to the 1831 text by Mery Shelley.
- The review of the 1818 text by Percy Shelley.
Both of this items are on almost every single copy of Frankenstein I own and have seen out in the wild and I'm sure I'm not alone most people who brought this book like myself wouldn't only own this copy of Frankenstein so it's just a little annoying seeing these two items here in this book but then again I understand it's a deluxe edition better to include everything.
One of the highlights for myself is the timeline of Frankenstein movies it's cool to see this included with some images from the movies and some basic info on each one. Keep on mind it's not a definite list of all Frankenstein films but most of the ones that a directly related to the original novel are here.
What's also here is a very long detailed informative introduction by Guillermo del Toro on Mery Shelley and her family plus the history behind the making of the book now this is the 3rd time I have seen something like this in a Frankenstein book the other two beings (Editions Frankenstein & Frankenstein Norten Study Edition) but the reason I found this so enjoyable was the included pictures of Mary's family and even some images of her original pages from the book plus loads of annotations detailing the changes made in the 1831 text along with extra info make it a well worth read.
To sum up I was very impressed with this book and love it to bits I will treasure this book and am very happy to ha e it in my collection. The editor Leslie S. Klinger did an amazing job with all the additional information and has made me now want to get my hands on some of his other classic books while the illustrations will be apart of my memory every single time I read any copy of Frankenstein from now till the end of time.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone who loves this story or even has the slightest interest in the story.
