Allen Carr (1934-2006) was a chain-smoker for over 30 years. As I was approaching 60 I was finding that I was struggling to recover from the night before as well as I used to. I have never felt that I was an full blown alcoholic, just that I was drinking far too much and could not seem to break the cycle.
This book explain how we are conditioned by society to think about alcohol from an early age, the social and mental pressures to drink and the results on quality of life and health.
Half way through the book I realised with an absolute certainty that my relationship with alcohol had changed and that I would never be controlled by the need to drink again. I have not given up completely (which is recommended). I have just chosen to drink very moderately. For example in the last two weeks I had 2 beers at a 12 hour party and one beer with a curry at a restaurant and did not feel the need for more.
Highly recommended.

The Pitcher plant analogy is very apt and can easily be applied to many drugs. I also like the down to earth approach. Too many methods on this subject try to blind you with science, as in the case with SMART recovery, or they claim that only a spiritual formula will help, as in the case of AA. Allen Carr stays clear of both these things and appeals to your common sense instead.
Once you've read this book you will be free of alcohol. If not then read it again, and again until the penny drops.
