5.0 out of 5 stars Loving and comforting lullaby written in a very poetic fashion
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 November 2016
This book is written as a lullaby and is very poetic and beautiful. It is so soft and warm I immediately realised that this had a sad tinge to it. I couldn't place why I felt that way but I did. I then realised written at the top of the second last page that it was written by the author in loving memory of her late sister. She has written this book for her late sister's children Josiah, Katy and Alex. As you can imagine that really did choke me up and so, I read it again.

It starts with a young child with his eyes closed wrapped up in a downy blanket and the window darkened out. The first page starts, "Once upon a northern night while you lay sleeping, wrapped in a downy blanket, I painted you a picture". The next page is, "It started with one tiny flake, perfect and beautiful, and special, just like you. Then there were two and then three". On the opposite page are three tiny lights on a darkened out page.

The story then goes on to describe what goes on at night when we are all asleep, the snow falling, pine trees falling flakes, rabbits hiding from the fox, the owl landing in the garden and pictures of squirrels playing. There are a few other pages with lovely words in the same style as the other pages. The illustrations are stunning.

Towards the end of the book is the same little boy in bed waking up and the window is bright with twinkly stars at the sides. the words "Once upon a northern night while you lay sleeping, wrapped in a downy blanket, I painted you a picture" and the next page has three little foxes and an owl in a tree with the words, "And then I had the moon gently kiss you and the wind whisper .... I love you."
The final page is the little boy looking out of the window.

This is a really nice book and young children would love it. I will give this to my daughter to take to the school where she works for her to read it to them or they can read it to themselves.

I was kindly given this book by Walker Books in exchange for a review.

I have added photographs.
