From the bestselling author of The Ragged Edge of Night comes a powerful and poetic novel of survival and sacrifice on the American frontier.
Wyoming, 1876. For as long as they have lived on the frontier, the Bemis and Webber families have relied on each other. With no other settlers for miles, it is a matter of survival. But when Ernest Bemis finds his wife, Cora, in a compromising situation with their neighbor, he doesn&;t think of survival. In one impulsive moment, a man is dead, Ernest is off to prison, and the women left behind are divided by rage and remorse.
Losing her husband to Cora&;s indiscretion is another hardship for stoic Nettie Mae. But as a brutal Wyoming winter bears down, Cora and Nettie Mae have no choice but to come together as one family&;to share the duties of working the land and raising their children. There&;s Nettie Mae&;s son, Clyde&;no longer a boy, but not yet a man&;who must navigate the road to adulthood without a father to guide him, and Cora&;s daughter, Beulah, who is as wild and untamable as her prairie home.
Bound by the uncommon threads in their lives and the challenges that lie ahead, Cora and Nettie Mae begin to forge an unexpected sisterhood. But when a love blossoms between Clyde and Beulah, bonds are once again tested, and these two resilient women must finally decide whether they can learn to trust each other&;or else risk losing everything they hold dear.

This is not a fast paced book. There's not a lot of dialogue in this book. There's not a lot of action in this book. What there is, is a story, told the way you might hear it from a seanchaí or a bard. It's flowing prose, full of descriptions that are meant to allow the the reader to imagine themselves in the time and the place and to allow him or her to feel what the characters are feeling. It's not a book you're going to zip through in a couple of days of reading. It's a book to savor, to stop to ponder a turn of phrase, or to take the time to build the setting in your minds eye.
It's a spiritual story, but not a religious one. It's a story of loss, pain, hate, love, life, death, and redemption.

However, it wasn’t just the gorgeous writing that I enjoyed, but the story itself pulled me in. It is told from the points of view of the four main characters, and Ms Hawker uses each successive chapter to build the plot as well as to show us each character’s take and attitude to the events. It is quite a slow-moving book, but I really didn’t want it to end. The subject and the way that the author handles some aspects in particular are quite unique. I can truthfully say that although I have read books which take place in similar settings, I have never read anything like this before. On top of all that, when I reached the end, I discovered that the novel is loosely based on some of the author’s ancestors which give an added twist. With beautiful writing, interesting characters, and an unusual story this book was bound to be a winner in my opinion. My only disappointment is that, so far, Olivia Hawker has only written one other book. I imagine that we’ll be seeing a lot more of her in the future though.
