Amazon.com Review

"Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?" Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in this well-loved classic by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.) Children today will be as entranced by these ridiculous rhymes as they have been since the book's original publication in 1960--so amused and enchanted, in fact, they may not even notice they are learning to read! (Ages 4 to 8) --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb.
By Victoria on 15 July 2020
Superb reading practice. Got this specifically for my 4.7 yo to read on his own as he is a beginning reader. Lots of phonics and sight words. Every page is dedicated to one word family practice. Even if words are just made up and make no sense, they adhere to the phonics. It makes a child understand how to read an unfamiliar word regardless its meaning. And that's the point of phonics, to be able to decode unfamiliar words. Go for this one and Hop on Pop, which is also useful for word family practice, although has less text, but still perfect for developing fluency.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful sounding silliness and fun

On Monday, on the BBC TV quiz ‘Only Connect’ there was a question where you had to guess the 4th in the sequence:

[picture of Michael Fish] [Michel Fish, Michael Fish] ? ?

Once my husband had identified Michael Fish (ex-TV metereologist), I knew the answer was “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”, without having the faintest idea why. It just sounded right. The answer was then given, stating that it was a Dr.Seuss book.
Then on Tuesday, at the pub quiz, we had to decipher three book titles:
1 F, 2 F, R F, B F (also S 5, and A T o 2 C)
There was that book again! I could not recall having read it, and my husband had never heard of it, so there was only one thing left to do. On Wednesday, I ordered a copy. It arrived on Friday, and now on Saturday I have read it and am writing my review.
I love it!
The illustrations are superbly fabulous, and the rhyming text anarchically silly. This is not a book to teach children about reality (it does have ‘lessons’ on counting and colours) – it is a book about the way words sound, and all the fun you can have with rhyming. Incidentally, it will help children learn to read, as they see how similar sounding words look similar too. But, for me, the pleasure of reading it, was in the way it sounded and looked.

“If you like to go Bump! Bump!
just jump on the hump of the Wump of Gump”

“if you wish to wish a wish,
you may swish for fish
with my Ish wish dish”

This is a great book for any child – whether they are reading for reading yet or not. It is also fun for middle-aged non-parents!
I will be passing this lovely book on to two of our pub quiz team mates who have a one-year-old child. It is never too early to start kids on books.
