He founded and oversees SAY Detroit, a consortium of nine different charitable operations in his hometown, including a nonprofit dessert shop and food product line to fund programs for Detroit’s most underserved citizens. This book has the potential to drive one to throw away little deeds of dismissal of our parents that we may be so so busy committing every single day, to reserving ourselves more time and space for deeds that we think are more important for us. The book has the potential to grab you by the collar and help you realise how foolishly you are chasing things that may never measure up into what will ultimately fulfill you, while the clock ticks away precious (dearly precious) hours of moments you could have basked in the glory of stepping into the mind, heart and soul of the only person (your mother....for many it is also our fathers...yes!) whose sole intention has and always been to see you live blissfully and happily, regardless of how much grumpiness you may have unloaded on her.
The book is groundbreaking in its ability to drive one nuts about the jaw-droppingly little degree of what we really really are regularly aware of the sacrifices our parents are making for us, asking for literally nothing in return.
When his life crashes, Chick spends one day with his dead mother, learning (in rewind) about the lushness of the angelic persona that she silently ushered him with all his childhood, to finally lose all his grip on that talking image of her to the stars. He realises this foolery and tears filled his soul.
The amount of impact this book has had on my life is indescribable!
I love you my mom, so much!
I have been dropping nonsensical, self-entered stuff just to be around her all the time....this is the overarching shift that has happened within me after reading this masterpiece. Same happening with father! Remember, parents have the purest form of love for you. Others will have returns-tagged! :)
I spend less time on me and more of losing myself in learning about life from my parents now!
Thank you Mitch really!
Please read this book if your parents are still alive!
Three books so far have made me so deeply aware of the beauty of parents--- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Father Figure by James Cudney and then, this!
.
But as Chick hangs between life and death, he is visited by his dead mother and he gets to spend a day with her- a day that will turn his world upside down, again.
Chick has lost a lot in his life, including his dream of becoming a successful and world-class baseball player. And he is always grumpy and complaining, not knowing that his struggles might be nothing but a stupid rebellion against everything normal. As Chick spends his time with his now dead mother, he gets to know how tough her life was-a single, attractive women living in a small town and putting two kids through college, while his father left home, never to return.
.
'For One More Day' is about a family made of Ghosts but a family nonetheless. While Chick tries to choose between life and death, he realizes that his life might not really be as dramatic as he made it be.
The narration is fluid and it was so easy to get into the story and feel all these feelings of despair, hope, struggles, and redemption.
This book brings in a lot of understanding and grace! For One More Day is the story of a mother and a son, and a relationship that continues for a lifetime and beyond.
After reading this book, I have started loving my parents much more than I did earlier.
The little things our family does to show love and we take for granted...
You can go your whole life collecting days, and none will outweigh the one you wish you had back.
One day spent with someone you love can change everything.

How many times do we take granted that there’ll always be endless tomorrows, never truly believing that the future can be stolen from us in a heartbeat?
When our time with those who love us unconditionally comes to an end it cannot be returned. Our mistakes cannot be rectified, words remain unspoken, and the weight of every ‘what if’ grows heavier every day.
The ethereal magic of this story is that it offers the most precious gift of second chances, as it will repair the shattered pieces of your crumbling heart by providing the impossibly rare opportunity to see things from an entirely difference perspective.
The patient, guiding hand that was always offered, although often unconsciously brushed aside, is once again extended to Charley ‘Chick’ Benetto at the darkest, lowest moment in his life. That hand belongs to the most patient, calm, and selfless keeper of secrets – his deceased mother.
Charley’s tale is a gentle, emotive and necessary reminder has the power to nudge you back on course and appreciate those around us before it’s too late. Events left me with similar feels to ‘A Christmas Carol’ and nothing but fond memories.
I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this to any reader. I feel I haven’t lost any time while reading this book. I’ve gained a whole lot more.

I have previously read some of Mitch Albom’s books, like Tuesdays with Morrie and The five people you meet in heaven and have been able to connect with the stories. However, I don’t normally find the covers of his books particularly inviting but it was because it wouldn’t usually grab my attention that I picked this one up to read the blurb. And once I had read the blurb I had to read the book.
Most of us have lost someone close to us and have had thoughts of ifs and buts. I bought into the twists and turns of the book and it felt totally believable to me. I didn’t cry, but I definitely sat back at the end of the book and thought ALOT
There are some things as human beings we need to hang onto. This reminded me of some of those things.

Another brilliant book. Can’t wait for his new one.

My son read one of the Albom books (Tuesdays with Morrie) as a 15 year old at high school and said it helped him decide to be the best person that he could be in life. I suppose that's as accurate a description as I could come up with.
There is something deep and meaningful about the way this, and the other Mich Albom books are written. It projects an image of the situation in the readers imagination and leads you through a path of understanding and empathy in the journey the subject(s) in the book are facing. I found each of of the books hard to put down, and they became my end of day release from the stresses and strains of life. I think each reader will find their own personal emotional challenges and parallels from their experiences and personal circumstances.
I love the way these books are written. Mitch Albom has a style that I have never come across before. I would highly recommend if you do wish to read something fairly short and deep.
