Daniel Silva i think is in the wrong career. Instead of writing a good story he has made a practice of just googling some international events and making an article about them and convert that further into a 400 page something novel. He clearly lacks imagination and his work seems to be loosely inspired from other author's work most of the time.
Instead of being neutral about things he clearly shows favoritism about culture/ideology always showing other things in a no doubt bad picture. The whole novel seems to be blaming a certain type of thinking in practicing it and promoting it while the author himself seems to be part of such society and promoting his thoughts through novels. While i am not a big fan of Russia or extreme right thinking and neither a hater of west or liberal thinking but when i pick up a novel i expect a good story and not 400 pages of bitching.

A deliberately measured pace, a cameo by the team, and a much richer afterward - one with echoes of history and current affairs, makes this book a good read. It's good to see Mr Silva not leaning on too much flashback. Not the thrill a minute nerve wracking thriller, but a gentle stroll down history, mythology and religion and perhaps a preview of the next leg of Gabriel Allon's adventures.

After writing master pieces like 'black widow' 'house of spies' and 'moscow -series', Daniel Silva unnecessarily tries to copy paste Dan Brown's classic ' Angels And Demons' in a Gabriel Allon setting. The result is pathetic, with super-spy Allon being reduced to a bad copy of legendary Robert Langdon. The plot is outlandish, writing is lazy and overall the book is avoidable.

This book was terrible on so many dimensions, it is difficult to specify them all. To begin, let me say that I own every one of Mr. Silva's books and have read them all at least twice. Until the current book, he was my favorite author in this genre. No more. His books are now totally off my list unless I see credible evidence of a very serious about face on his part.

The plot is hackneyed, and I believe the book is the third of this series focused on the Vatican where there is a huge right-wing conspiracy, literally one of biblical proportions. The cabal consists of over 50 high level clerics from the Vatican, plus several heads of European countries in the mold of Donald Trump, plus one evil industrialist. Think the Da Vinci code meets evangelical bible study classes. Priests are murdering people left and right, including the Pope. Entirely new gospels emerge out of the Vatican's archives and, if allowed to become public they would destroy the Catholic Church and entirely remove the underpinnings of anti-Semitism in this world. Enter Gabriel Allon and the one sincere, honest Catholic priest besides the deceased Pope (really?)

In short, conservatism is about to destroy the world and only liberals can save it. Many media sources spread this message daily, we do not need to hear it once again in our free time. More to the point, I don't and will not in the future from Mr. Silva.

Don’t understand Silva’s barely veiled bashing of Christians and Christianity. In this era of escalating anti Semitism, doesn’t he know that American Christians are the Number One (by far!) supporters of Israel!? Who knows where American policy toward Israel would be without that support.

We have loved his books for years, but this anti Christian trend puts it all in jeopardy. Wake up Daniel. A Big slice of your sales is people who love Israel, and they are NOT lefty socialists.

That makes it readable, not necessarily good. Main problem -- the author has become predictable. Second, it seems like a formula not a novel. Third, he takes care to make a parody of Trump in one of the characters (I am not a Trump supporter, but gad, it is tiresome). Hopefully, this is the last Gabriel book -- the character is getting to be boring. Maybe one about Chiara (pre-Gabe)?

I wish I had waited to purchase for $2 -- used. Then someone else but the author would benefit.
