About the Author

Richard Wright (1908-1960) won international renown for his powerful and visceral depiction of the black experience. This is one of Wright's neglected texts, which is really a shame because it's a wonderfully rich read. I read it for a Black and Brown Existentialisms class and it was fantastic viewed through that lens.

This book details the protagonist's efforts to live out his days according to his own view of existential questions. Without spoilers, I will also add that the man gradually descends into a kind of Hell. I was repulsed by some of his actions; at the same time, however, I was curious to find out what would happen next.

It must be documented that Richard Wright was a great writer. However, after reading some of his other works, this is all the way to the left. I wonder if parts of this book was autobiographical. The first thing to notice about this work is the length of the novel. It is soooooo long and filled with way too much philosophical ideas. I feel like winning the gold medal after completing the read of this work. Cross Damon is one intelligent man who is so confused and sick in many ways. His downfall is women and his protection of his race. The writer paints a stereotype that too many black men thirst for sex is undeniable. I am not happy about that analogy. Cross was a confused man who disposed those who got in his way. . I wonder if Mr. Wright attempt in writing such a different novel was his way of showing the world is talent does not lie in one dimension?

I'll keep this brief. If you are reading this review, you are already a Richard Wright fan.
And if you are of a certain age, you probably first read this as a Penguin Classic paperback in the sixties, and loved it!
Little did we know that it was so wonderful in spite of having major portions of it hacked off by the editor.
This is the full and complete version as written by Mr. Wright, himself. It is truly a historical printing that expands on some of the most important character development, and back-story of critical events in the previous abridged editions.
Additionally the price was only $3.90 for a "Brand New", very high quality softcover edition with beautiful photographic art, and a tasteful matte finish suitable for coffee table duty.
You cannot lose on this purchase!!
