This is a book for beginners. Advanced painters may find helpful tips here, such as the page "Taming Phthalo Green", but the target audience is beginners who want to paint but can't afford to take a course locally or who have no local courses. This book starts right at the very beginning, how to hold the brush and how to load it with paint, before it even goes into colour mixing. It starts with simple exercises to get used to mixing and handling paint, then goes to a simple shapes exercise that I still use for trying out techniques. It then gives the student three beginner exercises in the most requested types of painting: the still life, the landscape, and the portrait. Yes, the portrait is a bit cartoony and simplistic -- it has been simplified for a beginner audience, who have been working up the nerve to tackle this. Each exercise is designed to instill confidence in the student, to give them a foundation, to make them FEEL ready to move ahead. I've since moved on to other techniques and other books, but this book will remain on my shelf for a long time.
Very nice little practicum. Covers all the basic skills you need to make an oil painting come alive and look 3D. But it’s friendly and encouraging at the same time. And the best part is it’s short enough that you can work through the exercises again a year or so after your first go, and you won’t feel bored ... you’ll see yourself getting more proficient!
It can be hard to know what sort of art books to buy if you're a beginner. If you want to get a solid foundation for oil painting techniques and concepts this book does a great job. I went through it sequentially and felt the benefits.
This is exactly what I was looking for, a step by step progression that builds skills with each lesson. Great for the beginner painter. Excellent section in the 1st chapter on supplies. Very helpful and well written book.
Took the book into an art supply store and have everything I need to get started. The way the book is laid out, the way the procedures are presented and the help I got at the store have given me the confidence to proceed.
I am educated in Fine Arts, therefore; found this book to be a little too basic for me. However; it's a great book to pass onto someone who is just learning, or to keep as a paint go to book if you've forgotten some techniques.
This book is the perfect book for someone who just started their interest in oil painting. It is not intimidating and it works lesson by lesson so you build upon all your skills a little at a time. I highly recommend it.
