Spooky and filled with an incredibly dark and creepy sense of foreboding, Currie has perfectly filled the middle grade desire for a healthy dose of fear.
Let me start by saying that I do NOT read ghost stories or creepy stories or scary stories of ANY kind in the adult genre. However, as a middle grade kid, all I read was Christopher Pike and RL Stine, so I definitely have a base with which to compare PECULIAR. Currie completely blows that level of creepy out of the water with her debut novel, and today’s middle grade readers are much better off for skill. I can honestly say that I will never look at a ventriloquist dummy the same again after reading this book!

I absolutely love the way the setting almost takes on a life of its own in this novel, with the dark and stormy skies invading my brain space the entire time I was reading about Tess and her quest to solve the mystery of her new house. But aside from the major middle-grade-appropriate-spooky factor, I adored how perfectly Currie captured the heart of a 6th grade girl and her anxiety over moving to a new school and meeting new friends. Tess’ family is delightfully quirky and I fell in love with her parents and their free-range parenting and lack of technology. This little theme was thrown in with just the right amount of humor to keep it from being preachy, but will probably still stick with kids.

Highly recommended purchase for middle grade classrooms and libraries. I would say the sweet spot for this story will be grades 4-6, but it will definitely appeal to some 7th and 8th graders as well. May be a little scary for some 3rd graders.

Wonderfully creepy

This was the Halloween story that I was looking for. Currie developed a wonderfully creepy atmosphere not only with the house and forces inside but the surrounding area of Chicago. It tugged at all the right elements about Halloween that I love, an old house, a legend, seemingly malevolent forces, even a trip to a cemetery. There are lightning storms followed by one of the kids going missing and there's even a really disturbing ventriloquist doll that starts to shed tears. The pacing of this was wonderful and it's the perfect story to make you want to leave the lights on. Just loved it. I really identified with Tessa's sadness over having to move away from her best friend Rachel, it's never an easy situation but it did take me back to my own times of moving around with my family when my dad was in the Army. You never really get over that feeling and unlike Tessa, I didn't make friends as easily, but the whole situation felt true to the emotions. Even her reasoning that it wasn't her dad's fault, just that the circumstance stunk. Another aspect that I really liked was Tessa's "tug-of-war between her imagination and common sense." How some things may have a logical/scientific explanation, but there were still things that couldn't be explained. Overall a fantastic creepy ghost story with just the right amount of mystery that I enjoyed very much, and like so many others I'm hoping there will be more stories with these lovely characters.

Thanks to the #kidlitexchange network and @lindsayncurrie for providing me with the review copy of this book - all opinions are my own. And I liked it so much that I purchased my own copy, too!

This is a middle grade story about ghosts, friendship, family and Chicago that I couldn’t stop reading! It is based upon a true story from Graceland Cemetery in Chicago and at first was really scary (at least for someone who NEVER reads ghost stories!). In fact I told my husband one evening that I had to stop reading or I’d never sleep! However, the mystery, the characters, the friendships and the great story had me quickly picking it up the next day. As more of the characters were revealed, and the more I learned about the ghost of the little girl who was haunting Tessa (the strong, brave, resourceful and likeable main character) the more I wanted to quickly finish the book. I know this is going to be a perfect story for all of those kids who ask for a scary book! And there are definitely a LOT of those kids in every library. But more importantly, this is a great choice for kids who are coping with middle school friendships, acceptance of a not so normal family or quirky friends. 5 stars for sure!

I'm always a little nervous when I'm really excited about a book because their is always a chance I may not like it. However, from the moment, I started this book I knew it was going to be a good one and it turned out to be even better than I expected! This was such a fun story and I was definitely creeped out at times!

Tessa was such a well written and well rounded protaganist. It was fun to see how she developed and became more confident throughout the book. I liked that even though she wasn't happy with her families move she made the choice to try and make the most of it. The fact that her parents understood why she felt the way she did and allowed her to have and express those feelings without making her feel bad, was nice to see. I was glad that we got to see that Tessa's feelings were valid and she could share them without being bratty or unecessarily whiny.

I could seriously gush all day about the amazing friendships and the execellent communication that was shown throughout this book. The kids were so supportive and accepting of one another. They were able to express their concerns for one another and even though their was plenty of teasing it wasn't mean spirited or hurtful. They were able to work together and form plans that utilized each others strengths and most of all they were able to be honest with each other. I was so happy to see a book with positive, healthly friendships, especially in a MG book!

One of the other really great things about this book was the history and legends that were included. It was so much fun learning about Chicago and looking up some of the information, online, in order to learn even more. I enjoyed being able to see pictures of some of the actual places and things that were mentioned during the course of the story.

Personally I could have done without Reno, LOL. I'm not really a fan of ventriloquist dummies, especially the old fashioned ones (imagine Slappy from Goosebumps). I will admit he was a fun addition to the story, but he really creeped me out!

The only problem I found with this book was a few minor continuity errors. They mostly involved character actions/movements and honestly most people probably wouldn't have even noticed. Overall this was a really good book and I would highly recommend it.
