For me, I want my child to read stories about strong women standing up for what they believe in, not kids who find hats and wander into a movement with no agency or intentionality at all. It’s a disgrace to the women’s march, which was not an accidental convergence of strangers who just wandered there but a well-organized movement full of people uniting to advocate for change.
When I initially heard about this book, designed to explain the significance of the pink hats to young children, I worried about the violent genesis of a symbol that has arisen to counter male aggression.
I need not have worried. The Pink Hat is a positive & happy look at this movement whose worldwide marches have been characterized by warmth, inclusiveness, & ebullient sisterhood and humanhood. It is especially appropriate that this lovely children’s book was written & illustrated by a talented man who has embraced the message of the movement.
