Giovanni doesn't really go into his personal story and experience much, but I know from reading his blog that he is a very deep thinker and a true expert in the art of meditation (I think he has around 8-9000 hours formal practice in a variety of techniques, and has had deep insight experiences), not just another person jumping on the ever-growing bandwagon of selling anything to do with meditation. I highly recommend it for beginners all the way through to those with hundreds of hours of practice under their belts.
So plenty to choose and decide which meditation suits you best!
The author has made it his business to master all known meditative practices (at least 30 of them, at any rate) and he explains them all simply and clearly so that you can experiment with any or all of the different traditions and find the practices which which are most useful to you personally.
In my own case, I had been meditating for 4 years (mindfulness of breathing) and I had arrived at point where I felt the need to supplement my practices with other physical and mental exercises but I was unsure about how to proceed. So I found that this book met my needs perfectly. I imagine that even very advanced practitioners could benefit in the same way.
I recommend getting a hard copy of this book rather than the kindle edition. The hard copy edition is in a large format which is beautifully designed and illustrated and it is ideally suited for use a reference text.
C'est un guide très pratique, le style est encourageant et bienveillant. Lire est déjà bénéfique.
This book is well laid out, simple to follow and understand, and has exercises for both beginners and advanced practitioners. The bright colour pages are lovely, and the pastel colours are all about calm and mindfulness. Now i will freely admit i do not do the chanting nonsense because i find it deeply distracting. For me i need total and utter silence to meditate, it is the only way i can switch my mind off, i know others are different but i cannot abide noise in general anyway.
I do advise however using this in tandem with mindfulness, many people are put off meditating because they think everyone just sits there and goes ohmmmm all the time , but thats just not true.
Find a quiet spot in the morning, you only need 5 minutes, if its noisy where you live, put on some headphones,or earplugs, and play some meditation music, i have found native american indian music the best for me, and the sounds of the forest and ocean work well too.
Mindfulness and Meditation is all about practising things that can help you balance your day to day life and stresses, even if this means locking yourself in a cupboard for ten minutes because the kids are driving you mad, anywhere where you can get just a bit of peace and switch your brain off.
It covers the various styles of meditation and then starts you off with some basic techniques. I’ve had meditation CD sets before and they never worked for me as the voice of the narrator was off-putting. I wasn’t convinced meditation can be taught through a book and I’m so glad to have been proved wrong.
I’m finding this book a treasure and highly recommend it.
It tells you how to start, understanding what meditation is, the quiet mind, mindfulness, breathing, Tai Chi, visualisation, mantras and much more. This book certainly makes you think and then you can try so many of the roads yourself and fit in some mediation on a daily basis to suit you and things that you will benefit from. Anything to quiet the mind.
