The real strength of the book is probably Waughs informed reading of three 'postmodern' texts by Salman Rushdie, Alice Walker and Doris Lessing in combination with three canonical 'modernist' texts by Joseph Conrad, Virginia Woolf and James Joyce. The significance of T.S. Eliot's criticism in the construction of modernism is also viewed. It needs to be said that this book was published in 1992 and there has been a long ongoing dabate since then.
