I rarely read fiction. The imagined world really doesn’t interest me as much as the real world…..therefore more than 90% of my reading is non-fiction.
Bill Clinton’s collaboration drew me to this book. James Patterson is possibly one of the most read authors in the world….believe there are more than 350 million copies of his books have been sold. I did not read any of his books except his two collaborations with Ashwin Sanghi…Private India and Private Delhi….and kind of liked them…..my brief straying from non-fiction was into familiar territory…as the first collaboration was based in Mumbai and the second was into Delhi.
The President is missing – is also Bill Clinton’s first foray into fiction. He was the insider collaborator who provide insights into the innards of the Presidency and the White House to James Patterson, the serial novelist.
It has al the elements of a modern day thriller – a cyber terrorist out to wreak havoc – to cripple and destroy America, there is the mandatory Jihadi organization, the sharp shooters and mercenaries and the canvas being 1600, Pennsylvania Avenue where our famous two term ex-President was supposed to have contributed to the book.
Implausible situations - is the only word to describe this book stretching over 500 pages. Here we have a president who side steps his entire organization ( the CIA, Secret Service and a host of military and intelligence organizations) and directly deals with terrorists who want to turn a new leaf by meeting them unarmed and un-protected in crowded stadiums and where state secrets are passed on thru his daughter. Of a President cossetting with a bunch of hacks and trying to crack passwords of virus malware that are to destroy all the US networks. To make the implausible ludicrous, he also has the Heads of State of Germany, Israel and Russia for company in this off-site adventure when he goes underground and incommunicado….and hence the title The President is Missing. At times, the President in the novel reminds you of Mr. Trump.
Don’t let the venerable Clinton’s name on the book propel you to buy / borrow and read this book.... waste of time and effort.
And now let me go back to my slow, steady and at times sagely world of non-fiction!
A political thriller which keeps on swaying from one side to another. As the story picks up it will keep you glued to the book. Both, Clinton and Patterson have done a good job.
Prasadbook as always is best. Thanks!!
Plot - 9/10
Story telling - 10/10
There is one thing though. The book, since it is kind of a thriller (with suspense inbuilt), has too many twists. If you are accustomed to reading thrillers, you would know which twist is fake, and which one is real.
But very enjoyable book overall.

President Jonathan Duncan is facing a select committee hearing. The Speaker of the house seems determined to have him impeached for allegedly having a ‘phone conversation with the world’s most wanted terrorist - Suliman Cindoruk. POTUS invokes executive privilege. Why? For reasons only known to himself the president leaves the White House, his covert departure known only to his oldest friend and White House counsel, Danny Akers. The president is missing. Speculation as to why leads to a media frenzy. No-one knows where he is or what his intention is. But what faces the USA is certain destruction of everything dependent on the internet - and in this day and age that means - everything. And this book is truly unputdownable…
I have read some ridiculous comments about this book. Why? Because Bill Clinton is a co-author? Really? What happens when two highly intelligent individuals cooperate on a political thriller (and I say that without prejudice) results in a story so riveting, so breathtaking, so pulse-racing, that took me behind the machinations of US politics into a world of subterfuge and nail-biting tension.
I recommend The President is Missing without reservation.
Yet Clinton’s scale of telling tales isn’t evident in this one. It’s just a normal superb James Patterson. I’m sure Mr Patterson could have done just a good a job without Clinton.
So the amazing combination of the planets best novelist plus the worlds most notorious men misleading tale teller just adds up to “worlds best novelist” - shame, but worth a read, great read page in page out :)
A ridiculous plot that’s full of holes. The President is supposed to be dangerously ill but there’s no mention of the illness for the second half of the book (while he’s personally derailing a major terrorism attack). The plot has the President ordering the secret service to let him leave the White House secretly to meet a terrorist at a baseball game! Insane. Its like Bill Clinton spin a fantasy about what he wishes he’d been like as President, they got an intern to write the book and just banked the royalties. Really poor
As expected it is a well written high drama adventure full of espionage, terrorists, high dungeon and betrayal but surprisingly cushioned with a ‘human’ President, who you couldn’t help but like ails and all, he is very honest and down to earth and admirable
Unlike some of the other characters we get to meet, some we find out about straight away some are taunted before the reader in a ‘is it them or is it not’ way, all enjoyable
Quite a lot of tekkie speak, not insurmountable but some did go over me
It’s obvious Clinton’s experience and knowledge are in play in the book and that makes it all the more believable
Aside from a hearty jingoistic speech on America which turned a bit eye raising at the end it was a book I was pleased to finish……because I knew I had the next one to read
Superb hook you in and keep you there writing
