Review

Thought-provoking . . . An accessible addition to libraries that may function as a springboard for a discussion on positive communication and the importance of listening."—School LIbrary Journal

"Like Ludwig and Barton’s previous picture book, The Invisible Boy (2013), which concerns a quiet child, this book has a purpose. It deals with a recognizable problem, offers some points to discuss, and delivers its message lightly." —Booklist

"Sympathetic and most of all, hopeful."—Publishers Weekly

"The ending reflects real life in that Owen still has bouts of talkativeness, though now he does also listen for others' input. . . . Similarly talkative youngsters struggling with social interactions may want to schedule their own laryngitis days." —Kirkus Reviews

“This delightful story shows the beauty and benefits of tuning in and listening to others in compassionate, caring ways—something we definitely need more of in our chatter-filled world!” —Dr. Michele Borba, bestselling author of UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World

A Junior Library Guild Selection --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read aloud for chatty kathys
Reviewed in the United States on 28 March 2019
A student in my undergraduate course wanted to read this but it wasn't in our local library so I bought it for him to use then add it to my collection. Its a sweet story of Owen who talks over people, interrupts, and needs to work on active listening until he looses his voice. It forces him to communicate in other ways and to listen 10x more than he "speaks." He learns from this situation then intentional plans on how to talk less and listen more. I read it to different classes of K-4 students and I will say K-1 did not get the message and needed it explained. Second graders also had to be guided through that no he did not get laryngitis that often later because they took it so literally. Third and above totally got it. I will say the photos are important especially the background speech bubbles so I found students "got it" more when I read it under a document camera so everyone could see it better than when I read it from sitting on a chair at the front of the carpet. The book comes with a book cover which I removed and laminated for other purposes before putting it in my classroom library.
