Questions about the series
Q: What are The Books of Winter?
A: The Books of Winter are an epic urban fantasy series that I wanted to write to blend aspects of epic fantasy and urban fantasy. I wanted to focus more on the paranormal/supernatural worlds/realms established throughout mythology while putting my own spins on them. The series is set in the same urban fantasy universe as The Grave Report. Expect fun crossovers, easter eggs, and references. Some readers say Dangerous Ways is like Highlander Meets Neverwhere.
Q: What's the reading order?
A: At this time, there's only one novel in The Books of Winter available. The second novel is slated for publishing in 2018. Until then, you can also enjoy The Grave Report series set in the same universe.
Book one: Grave Beginnings.
Book two: Grave Measures.
Q: How do I know if I'll like Dangerous Ways?
A: Well, there's only one way to really know. But, if you like elves, faeries, gods and darker--nameless things, swords, magic, fantasy and faerie tales set today, you're in for a fun ride. But if you want to be sure...

All legends are born of truths. And just as much lies. These are mine. Judge me for what you will. But you will hear my story first.
I buried the village of Ampur under a mountain of ice and snow. Then I killed their god. I've stolen old magics and been cursed for it. I started a war with those that walked before mankind and lost the princess I loved, and wanted to save. I've called lightning and bound fire. I am legend. And I am a monster.
My name is Ari.
And this is the story of how I let loose the first evil.
Thus begins the tale of a storyteller and a singer on the run and hoping to find obscurity in a tavern bar. But the sins of their past aren't forgotten, and neither are their enemies. Their old lives are catching up swiftly and it could cost them the entire world. No one can escape their pasts and all stories must have an ending.
A dangerous evolution in the game threatens Devrim's new life. NPC monsters are rallying. And they have one Beast Queen bent on ruling them all!
In the months since the Goblin King's defeat, Devrim has settled into a peaceful existence in the now prosperous village of New Haven. But prosperity invites challenge, and challenge creates chaos. And the world of Lorian is about to be tipped into war that it may never recover from.
The only way to save Lorian is to dust off his old skills and remember the hunt. But building a home has left him rusty–complacent, which is no way to be when predators are on the prowl.
A werewolf army amasses, threatening creatures and humans alike. Whispers of goblin clans unifying. And the pleas of a living forest make for interesting times.
Can Devrim hone his skills in time to face the Beast Queen and prevent a war? Because if he doesn't, the hunter will become the hunted!

—Jim Butcher, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Dresden FilesDon't make deals with the paranormal. They're better at it than you, and they never play fair.
Paranormal investigator and soul without a body, Vincent Graves, did just that—a deal made in desperation. Now it's coming back to bite him in the middle of a case.
He has 57 hours to investigate a string of deaths involving people who've made some devilish bargains. Too bad devils don't deal in good faith. It'd be easy enough, if he didn't have to deal with things such as:
Not great for a tight clock, because if he doesn't get to the bottom of this case in time, Vincent and company might just lose their souls.
Dirty deals are never done dirt cheap. And the supernatural always collect—big!

“Quick, clean action, solid character work and pacing. This series is worth your time.”
—Jim Butcher, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Dresden FilesWhat do shadows darting across the walls, cryptic writing, black fog, and a little girl who can see ghosts have in common? Paranormal investigator and soul without a body, Vincent Graves, has forty-four hours to find out.
To make matters worse, his years of body-hopping and monster-hunting are catching up with him. He's losing his mind. An old contact has shut him out. To top it all off, something's skulking through an asylum, killing patients.
Three guesses who might be next, and the first two don't count. The writing on the wall is not so clear. But one thing is: if he doesn't figure this out he's a dead man--well, deader--and a strange young girl might follow. Vincent's got his back against a wall, and that wall's crumbling.
Some days it's not worth it to wake up in someone else's body.

SCIENCE FICTION? FANTASY? IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR BOTH?
The distant future—like the distant past—is a place of myths, of legends, and of great heroes. Cyborg knights battle extraterrestrial demons to rescue a peaceful village. A young girl unlocks an ancient power to protect her world from offworld colonists. Here are stories not where magic is science, but with magic and science. Not knights and castles, but knights and starships. Wizards and ray guns. Swords and planets.
In D.J. Butler’s “Power and Prestige,” a pair of two-bit mercenaries are hired to solve a murder in a labyrinth beneath a crumbling city at the end of time. A young knight must face down an alien menace and awaken the power within in R.R. Virdi’s “A Knight Luminary,” and in “Saving the Emperor” Simon R. Green takes us deep into the Imperial City of Virimonde . . . and offers a glimpse at how the Deathstalker clan rose to power and fame.
Enjoy tales from Tim Akers, Jessica Cluess, L.J. Hachmeister, Susan R. Matthews, T.C. McCarthy, Jody Lynn Nye, and Tom Toner; a new world from Warhammer 40,000 author Peter Fehervari; and a new chapter in the Sun Eater saga from Christopher Ruocchio.

About Star Destroyers, coedited by Christopher Ruocchio:
“. . . spectacular space battles and alien contacts . . . themes of military ethics, the uses of artificial intelligence, and the limits of the capacity of the human mind. . . . it is the human interactions and decisions that ultimately drive the stories. . . . will appeal to fans of military and hard science fiction and any readers fascinated by the possibilities of space travel.”—Booklist
“. . . stories of giant spaceships at war, at peace, and in the often-gray areas between. . . . a worthy addition to a long tradition of ship-based fiction, and its authors portray captains, arcane astrogators, and civilian child passengers with equal depth. It’s recommended for fans of military SF and space adventure.”—Publishers Weekly
“. . . you’d probably expect some tight, action-filled space opera stories of giant space battles . . . and there’s some of that. But there are also espionage stories, rescue missions, political conflicts, alternate histories, even a few humorous tales. . . . each author took the premise in a different direction . . . if I had to identify one common feature to all the stories, it would be that they’re all fun. . . . Like it says, big ships blowing things up. What’s not to like?”—Analog
Christopher Ruocchio is the author of The Sun Eater, a space opera fantasy series, as well as the Assistant Editor at Baen Books, where he has edited several anthologies.
