JANE GOODALL : A REASON FOR HOPE
I came across her name in another book and got curious to know more about her and her work. Then in my son's textbook too there was a chapter on her. Next I heard her in TED Talks and was deeply impressed. I found that she has wrote many books too and therefore to know more, I promptly ordered her 'Reason for Hope' online which arrived in excellent condition and before the committed time.
As some of you may be knowing, Jane Goodall is world renowned conservationist mainly known for her groundbreaking studies on chimpanzees. Though not a trained scientist, she stayed amongst them for years and made many discoveries which changed our conception about these primates; chief amongst them being their ability to use tools and also feel emotions akin to those of human beings.
There are several touching videos in You Tube that depicts the mutual love and faith that Jane and the Chimpanzees share with each other.
'Reason for Hope' is described by her as her 'spiritual autobiography' and it fits the bill perfectly! She guide the readers through her beautiful world and also shares her concerns and fears. She is a firm believer of scientific progress and the capacity of human being to meet greatest of challenges but she is only too well aware of the pitfalls of the consumerist western civilisation. She does not skirt the uncomfortable questions and appreciates the dilemma the world today faces – removal of poverty and human well being vis a vis preservation of environment. They need not be mutually exclusive, she has concluded, only we need to get our priorities right.
Today we are facing a world ravaged with war, terrorism and large scale ecological violation and it is easy to lose hope. But reading her words one get infected by her optimism and energized to contribute in ones limited way – planting a tree, feeding a stray dog, taking public vehicle or better, walking, to the office. Who knows, our small efforts may help humanity in reaching the critical mass required to start a revolution that our planet desperately needs.
I have tried to introduce, perhaps inadequately, an illuminating figure who is working tirelessly despite of her advanced age for the planet we all inhabit. Her NGO, Roots & Shoots, is carrying forward her vision to different parts of the planet; though in India it seems that it does not have an office yet.
Such people deserve to be the heroes of our children rather than cricketers, industrialists and movie stars. Yes, she is one amongst the handful whose presence itself is a 'Reason for Hope' for us and our future generation.

Jane Goodall's destiny has been blessed with faith, resolve, and purpose. From a little girl inspired by Tarzan, she became the woman who worked alongside famed paleontologist Dr. Louis Leakey, accomplished scientific breakthroughs in Gombe, and ultimately became a champion of the environment. The journey has not been without its crises; she endured the horrors of World War II, assaults on the integrity of her work, a hostage-taking at Gombe, and her husband's slow, agonizing death. But throughout, her religious convictions have helped her survive - and Jane Goodall's pursuit of science has enhanced, not eroded, her belief in God. In this biography, she candidly shares her life, as well as the Gombe chimpanzees she introduced to the world nearly forty years ago. And she gives us convincing reasons why we can and must open ourselves to the saints within each of us. At one with nature and challenged by the man-made dangers of environmental destruction, inequality, materialism, and genocide, Dr. Goodall offers insight into her perceptions of these threats and celebrates the people who are working for Earth's renewal. Here, indeed, is Reason for Hope.

Jane's realtionship with nature is pure and innocent. She has explained well about the ecstasy she feels when in nature and how she experience the spiritual power. She also helped me to see all beings equal through her experiences.

A truly inspiring read!

Jane writes from the heart. She feels deeply about the animals she encounters and shares everything she finds, good and bad, about them.
The same goes for her personal life and her thoughts and ideas about the environment, and what we are doing to the world.
But the underlying message comes through loud and clear...that one person can make a difference and that person can be you!

Wasn't for me personally but would be for others.

When I bought it I didn't realise that it was about christianity. I thought it would of been more about her personal journey (silly me). I'm not religious so I didn't get past the 2nd chapter as it just didn't resignate with me.

I adore anything by Ms Goodall and this is no exception. what a life she has led. Weshould embrace her to the same level that Attenborough is loved by our nation - such is her contribution to our understanding of primates.

What an incredible woman, and what an inspiring humbling read. I have ordered one for my mum, a perfect read for her during lockdown. I hope enough people will come out of this with changed hearts and we can begin to slowly build a new world.

20 years on from Jane writing this book it is a very timely reminder of the rate at which we humans deplete and destroy our beautiful planet. Jane challenges us to review our own choices and the way we treat nature and animals in in a heartfelt, straightforward, lucid and objective way. This book is addressed to each and everyone of us.
