5.0 out of 5 starsI have trust issues after reading this book
Reviewed in India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ on 26 September 2017
This review will probably go down as the sloppiest review Iโ€™ve ever written. What even can I say? My duty to critical analysis and my response as a reader have collided violently. WHAT SHALL I DO?!
Psh, try to conduct a sedate, analytical review and then devolve into crazed, unrepentant gushing, thatโ€™s what.
The gist: At some point in the distant future, a specific class of humans evolve. They have silver blood and magical, X-Men powers like mind control, elemental powers, invisibility, etc. They rise to the elite classes and crush normal, red-blooded humans under their collective heel. The society becomes completely imbalanced and depraved, a la the Capital and the Districts in The Hunger Games. But one day, a Red girl named Mare discovers that she has both red blood AND special powers. After that, the Silvers try to use Mare as a pawn, thereโ€™s a rebellion, lots of bloodshed, and a love trident. (You read that right. A love TRIDENT, not a triangle. Three boys, one girl.)
Sounds very been-there-done-that, right? Red Queen has been hyped from here to kingdom come, but it has many detractors who have snarked mercilessly, and with good reason. The objective, analytical portion of my brain snarked pretty heavily. Mare, while cool, is cut from the same hardcore-but-secretly-soft-yet-also-mouthy cloth as most dystopian heroines. She has distant parents, sibling rivalry, and three boys who get caught in her orbitโ€”the loyal but snarky boy-next-door (Kilorn, aka Gale Jr.), the noble-hearted but traditional crown prince (Cal), and his younger, often-overlooked but sympathetic younger half-brother (Maven.) Of course, Kilorn hates the princes and everything they stand for, Cal has a witchy fiancee who hates Mare, and Maven and Cal have a frictive relationship thanks to Mare and other family issues. So much of the plot does revolve around Mare and her potentially romantic relationships with these three boys. Whether itโ€™s threatening Calโ€™s fiancee for touching him (HIS OWN FIANCEE!), watching Maven exchange moody glances with his brother, or sacrificing herself for Kilorn, Mare just canโ€™t catch a break.
Itโ€™s got to be hard writing a dystopian in a post-Hunger Games market, because I was drawing SO many parallels between the two. Kilornโ€™s presence. The rebellion. The bloodshed. The excess of the Capital Archeron. The emphasis the Silvers put on physical appearance and their own superiority. District 13 The Ruined City. Mareโ€™s position as a sort of mascot for both sides. I could go on.
But you know what? I donโ€™t freaking care. I DONโ€™T CARE. I DONโ€™T CAAAAARE. You know what else doesnโ€™t care? My brain certainly didnโ€™t care, because I literally couldnโ€™t even formulate these thoughts while reading. I had to wait HOURS after Iโ€™d finished this book to hash my feelings out with Gillian, because while I was reading, my own brain wouldnโ€™t let me get a word in edgewise.
Iโ€™m like, โ€œBut brainโ€”โ€
And my brainโ€™s like,
*violently shaking it's arms and head*

Iโ€™ve never been sassed by my own brain before, but my brain sassed me into submission because it wouldnโ€™t stop binging on this stupid book.
I read somewhere (sorry! forget where) that the author intentionally dumped everything that she enjoys in a book into her own stories, and boy does it show. Superpowers! Forbidden romance! World-building! Cute boys! Unappreciated boys you can cuddle! Brave but maddening, Gryffindor-esque boys! The boy next door! Horrifically tense moments! Bloodshed! Betrayal! Twists! Big Bad Government! Social injustice! Sweet family moments! Uneexpected, irreversible deaths! The crushing weight of parental expectations! THE BIGGEST, BADDEST POWER-FREE SHOWDOWN I CAN IMAGINE!
Gillian called this book a โ€œcrack book,โ€ and sheโ€™s totally right. Once you start, thereโ€™s really no way to stop. Ms. Aveyard dumped everything she loves in a reading experience into her book, and it seems that everything she loves is everything I love. This book is nonstop action, intrigue, and tension (both romantic and plot.) I felt that if I put down the book, something might happen without me. I also spent the entire book sickened with certainty that something awful was going happen, AND THEN IT DID, and it wasnโ€™t what I expected at all. I underestimated the plot and where it was leading. I thought I had it figured out, the neat little twist that would pull the rug out from beneath less perceptive readers, BUT OH WAS I WRONG. That last 15% was like being trapped in a prizefight with Muhammad Ali. It gave me a left and a right and BANG! Sneaky uppercut to the jaw, and I was down for the count.

This book vs. my heart/sanity
This book is a gift. Itโ€™s a flawed, cracky gift from the reading gods, and I need that sequel now before I go into withdrawals. Bless you, Victoria Aveyard. Bless your drug-peddling little heart.

โ€œFor there to be betrayal, there would have to have been trust first.โ€

----Suzanne Collins

Victoria Aveyard, the New York Times bestselling author, has penned a stunning and a heart-wrenching debut YA dystopian, Red Queen which marks the onset of an exciting new young adult series, Red Queen, which is a mixture of so many bestselling dystopian series, namely, The Hunger Games, Divergent and The Selection. This series opens with a girl, belonging from a submissive bloodline, that is dominated by the powerful bloodline, who will soon be conscripted for the army to serve the powerful bloodline's frontier. This is her story of how her life changes all of a sudden and has to make terrible choices to save the ones she loves.

Synopsis:

This is a world divided by blood โ€“ red or silver.

The poverty-stricken Reds are commoners, living in the shadow of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers.

To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from the Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change.

Then Mare finds herself working at the Silver palace, in the midst of those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control.

Okay firstly, I honestly and absolutely, LOVED this series, which is inspired from all those popular dystopian series that changed the face of the post-apocalyptic world. And Mare, oh boy, she is the star and she is a new member of my list of fictional characters whom I love to fangirl about. This series is absolutely promising and with a movie deal on the horizon, I simply can't wait to get my hands on the next book.

Mare is seventeen, who is a Red living in a poverty-stricken town with her family and siblings. She would be enlisted for the army as soon as she turns eighteen. One day her fate changes when she tries to save her long-time friend's fate from getting conscripted. But with no job, she cannot buy him freedom, and that is when good luck shines upon her as she bags a job offer as royal guard in the palace of Silvers to protect them. But to protect the people she hates, to protect the people who dominates is a difficult task not as difficult for the Silvers when they discover her unmatched power in front of their eyes.

By now, everyone must have read this book as on Instagram, I can see pretty much all the bookstagrammers are fangirling on this series, and I simply couldn't wait to dive into this fascinating series. Well, let's get into proper reviewing now.

The world building is fantastic and as told from Mare's POV, the story is interesting and in-depth. The world created by the author is believable with powerful people harboring magical abilities, whereas the less powerful one suffer the wrath of those who bear the power and are under constant domination by them. This world is strong, sad and beautiful just like Panem. This is done with lots of vivid description and logic so that the readers can easily comprehend with such an imaginative world, well somehow it is unique in its own way.

The author's writing is eloquent and laced with tension, mystery and deep heart-felt emotions. The narrative is highly engaging and is bound to keep the readers glued into the heart of the story. The pacing is really fast as it will keep the readers turning the pages and anticipating till the very end. Yes the story definitely ends with a major cliffhanger that will make the readers look-out for the next book in the series. The story is addictive and immediately from the very first sentence, it is bound to pull the readers into the story. The story is also laced with lots of adrenaline-rushing action scenes that will make the readers feel like riding high on a roller-coaster rides.

The characters are interesting, believable and is inspired from realism. The main character, Mare, is the epitome of teenage girls belonging from poverty as Mare rises against the odd to save the people she loves and cares for, not once thinking for herself. She is brave, more like Katniss, who doesn't need saving even though there are three guys who could do anything for her to protect her. Her demeanor is motivating and worth rooting for. Cal is the next character, whom the readers will fall for, for his arrogance, for his loyalty towards Mare, for his support and definitely for his swoon-worthy looks. He is a complete package of being a Prince Charming. The rest of the supporting cast are extremely well-developed.

The romance, well, let's just say, there is no love triangle, instead there is love square. Yes three boys almost competing for Mare's attention. The romance depicted in the book is sweet, emotional and passionate. I totally ship Mare and Cal, but let's just see what happens in the next series.

Overall, this enthralling story has made me its fan and it is definitely a must read for all YA dystopian lovers. This story has so many layers that kept my mind curious and intrigued till the very end and right now I'm adding the Glass Sword on Amazon India's cart.

4.0 out of 5 stars An inventive, character-driven twist breathes new life into tired fantasy trends

Amid war and rising civil unrest, a young thief discovers the shocking power within her that sparks a revolution.

At 17, Mare knows that without an apprenticeship or job, her next birthday will bring conscription to join the war. She contributes to her poor family's income the only way she can, stealing from the Silvers, who possess myriad powers and force her and her fellow Reds into servitude. The Silvers literally bleed silver, and they can manipulate metal, plants and animals, among many other talents. When Mare's best friend, Kilorn, loses his job and is doomed to conscription, she is determined to change his fate. She stumbles into a mysterious stranger after her plan goes awry and is pulled out of her village and into the world of Silver royalty. Once inside the palace walls, it isn't long before Mare learns that powers unknown to red-blooded humans lie within her, powers that could lead to a revolution. Familiar tropes abound. Mare is revealed as a great catalyst for change among classes and is groomed from rags to riches, and of course, seemingly kind characters turn out to be foes. However, Aveyard weaves a compelling new world, and Mare and the two men in her life evolve intriguingly as class tension rises. Revolution supersedes romance, setting the stage for action-packed surprises.

Red queen by Victoria aveyard is a young adult novel set in a dystopian future. The story is set in a world where people are divided by the color of their blood. The silvers rule they are born with special powers and the reds are well underclass powerless to be precise dirt.
The story follows Mare barrow who is red possesing unique ability which she is unaware of but accidently displays them amongst silver aristrocracy and the king is forced to incorporate her in the upperclass society claiming she is a long lost silver to avoid chaos.
Mare is enagaged to king's younger son Maven but is attracted to Tiberias the heir to Norta. Mare steps into a deadly game of power when she turns a spy for red revolutionary group but things dont go quite as planned .
Well this is the general background of Red queen i have tired to keep it spoiler free .
My take well the book was really entertaining i mean a few chapters into it and i was hooked. It had some of the best action squences i have read lately, exciting climax budding romance well a love triangle though the romance takes a back seat. I had a few problems with the plot i mean while reading many parts i had this feeling..... Gee i have read this before some parts were too familiar and world the story is set in is a bit too complex and a wee bit confusing but i heard this is going to be a series so i hope it becomes more clear with the other books in the series.
This is Victoria's debut Novel and there is no denying the fact that its very well written all the characters are well drawn my favourite of course is Mare she is not coy or demure . She is a powerful character takes charge of the situation doesnt let love fog her vision . So you have a strong heroine brooding men action packed sequences betrayal and plot twist.... OMG the plot twists.... It will keep you turning the pages.
If you liked the hunger games and the selection series you will definately love this so pick it up i promise you will be entertained.
