Great book to teach children important value for life. I saw this book in a video of Dr. Mayim Bialik where she talked about raising her kids. I immediately ordered the book. And this is a really nice and short story and I like the illustrations.
And I like that it's a hardcover book. And small. So good to read with you infant :)
Actually I am not a fan of Mr. Scarry's illustrations, and even less a fan of these lousy old style hardback books. However(!), the story of the polite elephant and how wonderfully useful it has been in helping teach my children to be more polite more than makes up for what I dislike. Any time my children do something rude I ask them what the polite elephant would have done and that fixes that.
This is my 21 month old daughter's current favorite book! Richard Scarry's illustrations are so delightful and I like the content of this book teaching important concepts of good manners. We now refer back to this book often and make up new concepts like "The Polite Elephant knows we use our inside voices inside!" I sort of wish the book emphasized some different things, like apologies, asking permission, tidying up etc but it's a great starting place. Some other reviews mentioned the manners in this book are obsolete but other than "tipping one's hat" I don't really agree that that's the case.
