I think the word I most associate with this volume is growth, we finally see the Runaways in ways we didn't think they could, in some cases, like Molly, it's pretty evident, turning in a moody teenager (no surprise really) and Chase, who turns out to be the responsible one of the bunch. Rowells writing keeps fleshing out every single one of the characters in new and exciting ways! Karolina takes on a self discovery journey while Nico gets reminded of her time among heroes, Chase finally faces Gert's new relationship and Victor confronts Doombot's nature.
Sadly, the magnificent artist Kris Anka is no longer the main penciler for the series, but fear not! Andres Genolet does a superb job, his lines are polished and solid looking, his composition is creative and his characters are dynamic even in the most mundane situations. Speaking of artists, here's something for you, Niko Henrichon, yeah THE Niko Henrichon from award winning Pride of Baghdad, pencils a few pages and, damn! if that's not a treat I don't know what is.
This volume also switches colorists, Triona Farrell, Chris O'Halloran, Michael Garland and Eisner winner Matt Willson take turns coloring the series, although their styles are very distinctive every single one of them is a master of their craft and the colors never looked better.
The letters are done by one of the best in the industry, Joe Caramagna makes lettering look easy, his work conveys mood and pace perfectly, his lettering blends with the art and never gets in the way of it, personally Iove his style, he always goes for a very clean aesthetic and I greatly appreciate that.
So, that's it, seriously, you don't want to miss this volume.
