About the Author

Sophie Cleverly was born in Bath in 1989. She wrote her first story at the age of four, though it used no punctuation and was essentially one long sentence. Thankfully, things have improved somewhat since then, and she has earned a BA in Creative Writing and MA in Writing for Young People from Bath Spa University.
Now working as a full-time writer, Sophie lives with her partner in Wiltshire, where she has a house full of books and a garden full of crows. The books largely consist of fantasy and historical novels; many of them for children and young adults. You probably don’t want to know what the crows consist of.
The first title in the Scarlet and Ivy series is Sophie’s debut novel, written after Ivy appeared in her head one day and demanded she told the twins’ story.

i absolutely loved the concept and the this is literally perfect. for people of age 8-9+
this may seem like a book for kids but trust me it is absolutely amazing even for teens and tweens! I honestly am in loveeee with the cover. the book is soooo addictive and I honestly love the ending and the plot is extraordinary and perfect for people if u have read Murder most unladylike. If u haven't read that book, then I would recommend that one too!!

My 2 girls (10&8) absolutely adore this series. In her own words, my 8YO was particularly impressed that there was no "love stuff".

The story is punchy, engaging, and pacy, with some lovely cliffhangers that means both my kids come hammering downstairs to update us and beg for the next book. For a bedtime read there hasn't been a series in our house this addictive for some time!

My 8YO is a slow, every word reader, and my 10YO is a super fast skim kind of reader, and both have devoured and enjoyed these books.

This is a great new series that we’ve really enjoyed. We being myself and my 10-year-old daughter! I tend to read the books 1st that she wants just to make sure they are appropriate. This is similar to murder most unladylike. Again it’s set in a 1930s world and involves school girls, boarding school and mysteries.

In some ways this series is a bit darker than murder most unladylike but it feels in very similar vein to me.

The book is about twins Scarlet and Ivy who are identical. They are close twins and, as often with twins, one is very outgoing (Scarlet) and one is less so and a bit of a shadow. They oth sat the exam to get into the school, however Scarlet passed whereas Ivy didn’t. The book follows Ivy and her journey as she is forced into taking over Scarlet’s place at the school after a tragic event. It moves along well and I couldn’t really see where the story was going until very close to the end.

The characters are quite well written and it has a slight Harry Potter feel to it to - not with regards to the magic side of Harry Potter but the friendship side. Right from the beginning there are villains and a loyal friend. However it doesn’t follow in quite the same way! No spoilers but I would recommend this book, especially to girls in the 8 to 12-year-old age range. Although I do with this too and I’m in my 40s!

A MUST READ – AND ABSOLUTELY RIVETING!!

Talk about ‘page-turner’!?? I could not put this book down, and I am a slow reader, but I’d finished this in just two days!! Partly because I was also tempted to read through the day. Usually I have a rule to only read at night or when I’m in bed, however, this was just such a great story! To be honest, I’ve never yet had a bad book from the ‘Young Adults’ section; it’s a genre you can always depend on, and that’s highly recommended to all – and I’m well out of that age range myself, but it’s the genre I tend to go for mostly these days. Anything aimed at adults alone, I tend to get bored with and seldom finish...

Another aspect to these kinds of books that I don’t usually like, is the endless trilogy, saga concept; they all seem to be at it these days, and for the most part it’s a total cheat and rip-off as far as I’m concerned. However, I feel this an exception, as I’d made my mind up when I started reading this one that should it end unsatisfactorily in a way that only MAKES the reader need to read the follow on to gain any kind of ‘tying up of loose ends’, I simply wouldn’t do it, but this has a VERY satisfying ending, but with an ‘opening’ that makes you want to read on by CHOICE! (a different kind of thing altogether)

Ivy had a twin sister ‘Scarlet’, who dies mysteriously. Ivy is then, bizarrely, forced to take her place at the school where she was boarded – but it’s all cockeyed as to why she’s really there, and what actually happened to her sister. Instead she has to piece it together by locating portions of Scarlet’s diary from strange places. To say more would only serve to spoil the plot for those yet to read this riveting book, but it’s full of great characters that you won’t forget or get confused over, and they have substance so you always know who’s who – even those with smaller roles.

I LOVED this book, and unusually for me, will most definitely be reading the rest in the series; in fact, I’m just about to place my order for book number two at this minute!

Five stars from me!

NOTE: The story is set in 1930s England, but one single reference to ‘sleepovers’ really threw me so much I had to look up from my book for a moment, and was so out of place it took me a while to get back into the story... I’m not sure we had ‘sleepovers’ back then – and I think this was an American term originally – but I could be wrong...

As I browsed through endless books this one really caught my eye - I could at once tell even just by the blurb I'd love it!
So I bought it, I'm certainly VERY glad i did ^_^

Just a quick overview of the book:

This is told from identical-twin Ivy's point of view.
Her sister Scarlett attended Rookwood boarding school, but soon mysteriously died…
Ivy is informed she must immediately start at Rookwood and the intimidating headmistress Miss Fox takes her to the school.
While there she meets the wonderful Ariadne (my fave character) and ghastly Penny the teachers pet.
Soon Ivy discovers her twin left diary pagess for her to peice together, and with the help of Ariadne is left to uncover the mystery…
But then something truly terrible is found about the head which leads them to wonder 'Is Scarlett reallyh dead?'

Find out and read the book!

I recommend this for 9 (maybe 8) - 12 year olds.
Even being a super fast reader, it took me a good few days of itense reading to finish ths book!
This is engaging, funny, exciting and although long easy to read!
Please consider buying as you won't regret!

Coming from a 10 year old, I'd say this book wasn't that impressive. I am a huge fan about Murder Most Unladylike and is currently waiting for Robin Stevens' new series about May Wong to come out. It said this book was a perfect match, but I disagree. I would also like to say that I have met the authour UwU

1. First of all, most of this book is about doing these riddles. It is very predictable and therefore boring. I would have really liked if it a murder took place, but oh well

2. Secondly, the setting was well...."set". It was only about the school and I would have preferred a secret midnight excursion to hmmmm.....lets say to Aunt Phoebe's?

3. Thirdly, the plot twist was dissapointing. Who cares if (SPOILER ALERT) the ballet teacher is this person's daughter?

4. Also, after reading the deneoument, I remembered the price of this book. OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!! I would not recommend! >:(

5. Im in my fith year at school, and crazed in this reading phase to (hoplefully) boost my vocabulary for the 11+. Book did not help!!!
