About the Author

Born in Cheetham, Manchester, England, Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) developed her love for reading at a very young age. In 1868, Burnett’s first story was published in Godey’s Lady’s Book. She had begun writing for a livelihood and wrote non-stop. Her stories were being published on a regular basis in Peterson’s Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar and Scribner’s Monthly.
That Lass o’ Lowrie’s, her first full-length novel, was published in 1877. She started writing children’s fiction after meeting Louisa May Alcott and Mary Mapes Dodge—the editor of St. Nicholas, a children’s magazine. Many of her short works were published in this magazine.
She also wrote and published adult fiction, which included Louisiana (1880), A Fair Barbarian (1881) and Through One Administration (1883). Her play Esmerelda (1881) was nineteenth century’s longest running play on Broadway. Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886) was Burnett’s first children’s novel. It established Burnett’s reputation as a writer. Burnett published The Secret Garden in 1911. A classic of children’s literature, it became one of her most popular novels. Burnett’s other noteworthy works include The Lost Prince (1915), The White People (1917), The Head of the House of Coombe (1922) and its sequel, Robin (1922).

At a loss of words to describe this beautiful book. I was not much of a reader when i was a kid so i missed out on many timeless classics so now at 22 years I've been collecting as many books as i can to read them. Never too late, don't judge it by it's cover! This is a perfect book for young adults just as well. The story follows a troubled young girl who is orphaned at an early age and finds adventure and magic in the secret garden of her new guardian. Not going to get into the story, I'll let you read yourself!
As for amazon, outstanding service as always! book was delivered in 2 days time. I bought the hardback edition and the cover art is simply beautiful!

This novel got me me into thinking, if it was possible for a child of unfavourable disposition and health to get any better and live life so willingly in a forthright manner, I would plant a thousand Secret Gardens in every corner of the world. There would be no sickness, or suffering ever!

But on a second note I think maybe there really are a thousand Secret Gardens already and only because it must be a secret, no one can tell. All we need is to believe in 'magic' to uncover them and make them burst forth with energy and spirit that it will become so hard not to live.

This book makes me believe there is magic, even as an adult - not of fairylands or elves but of a kind which can be made quite possible in today's world. There's no better way to end this decade. Cheers Frances H. Brunett!

I had read the book earlier and the plot catches imagination so i thought i should buy one for my kid. Story is good but font size too small for 11 yr old about 9 Arial kind. Again No illustrations, illustrations just break the monotony of word and makes book just little more better for u to motivate kids to read it. So had to return the book.

Clothbound puffin editions are probably the prettiest editions there. The book is light and easy to hold and feels really good. The print is also pretty wide spaced. Easy on eyes for young children. Plus the vibrant colour is also a catching to hold kid's interest. Not a lot of illustrations.
Story is ofcourse directed towards young children aged 5-10. Easy and with some teachings.

Sentences which don’t make sense - for example ‘You have to have long past to the hills weeks in the past.” and The infant ate a few fruit and biscuits, and being thirsty she drank a pitcher of wine which stood almost crammed. It become sweet, and he or she did not realize how sturdy it was.“ and similar are found in every page so it’s impossible to make any sense of the book. I’m surprised something so badly edited is allowed to be sold.
I would like to have my money back.

My one star is for this version of the kindle edition of the book and NOT the story itself. I purchased the actual book but as i struggle at night to read such small print, i decided to download the free version on to my kindle to read in bed. I shouldn't have bothered! whoever edited into kindle form wants sacking, my 10 yr old could have done a better job. Half the book is just text with no spaces.
Marysaid, thegardener, whereis, Marthawent ect... the text is a little muddle also with sentences back to front.
If you are after the kindle edition, pay for it and swerve the amazon classic version at all costs.

I started collecting this series of books only because Harper brought out The Little Mermaid and the most recent The Secret Garden, so once I knew that these where coming out I had to be the proud owner of the whole set, which now total five in all. Peter Pan, Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast are all available to buy and illustrated by Minalima. The latest book I have to say is beautiful and I am not disappointed with my puchase. It is a hardback cloth outer cover in gold, red and green, the spine has the key to the garden, depicted on it and the Robin on the back. The end pages have small green ivy leaves inside. There are many interactive elements, but not as many turning wheels as other books in the series, this does not detract from the fun and interest of what these elements bring to the story. A must buy if you have the others or are looking for a more unusual copy of this book.

I ordered 22 of these for my daughter's birthday party 'going home' gifts and I was less than thrilled to be handing out books that seemed to be from our own well-loved library... they were definitely NOT new - as advertised. Be warned.

I had a copy of this book years ago when I was involved in restoring a public mosaic with scenes from this story, the author was born not far from where the mosaic is located, I hadn't realized my original copy was missing until my 3 year old was bought a kids version of the story. I bought this copy to read to him when he's old enough to understand. Reading this story never gets old, "watching" a spoilt little girl grow and mature along with the garden.
