I'm young and have just recently moved in with my soon to be husband! I cannot cook for my life but this book is absolutely the best cook book I've ever read! I have a few others but none are so easy to follow. I am Colombia of course so I feel great to know that I can make all the stuff my grandmother used to make for us all back in Colombia - it's like being there! Now all I have to do is get as good as my grandmother - but I know this book will definitely get me there! I HIGHLY recommend it to all beginners and even experts! You won't regret this purchase.
We purchased this book for ourselves and for all of our sons plus my sister-in-law. Everyone has been excited to see many recipes they remembered from our days in Colombia. Some of them have successfully followed the recipes for some delicious meals. This book is not one of those look at the pictures only but it accompanies the pictures with good instructions.
This cookbook confirmed my preference to only buy cookbooks from brick and mortar stores. The author is one of those who has to complicate the recipes. Why use5 ingredients when you can make your self look “better” by using 25.
I grew up in Colombia eating most of the foods in the book, often asking for recipes, but being told by the cooks, even my mom, "a pinch of this, a bit of that" and never knowing if it was going to turn out right when I cooked it. Many of the cookbooks I looked at (even in Colombia) either had strange recipes that I would never cook in a million years, were so darn complicated that it made me tired just to read the recipe, or were so pretentious as to be a total turn-off. This book gives ONLY recipes that every Colombian eats on a daily basis either at home or on the street. The ingredients are kept to a necessary minimum (no extra stuff to make it fancy), and the preparation is geared for home cooks, not professional chefs. It is true that it would have been great to have more and better photographs, but I don't miss them in this books because I carry those pictures in my head. All I have to do is see the written word, and puff!! there's the full sensory experience; but those cooks who have never eaten, much less prepared the food may have trouble with the visualization thing, so they need the photos, but don't let this small factor keep you away from this great cookbook. Thanks to this book I can now cook and EAT foods such as Panderos, Almojabanas, Boyo de Mazorca and Torta de Maduro and all my other comfort foods. I love, love this book. I love it so much, that I am giving it for Christmas to all my gringo-colombian relatives. In a nut shell......if you like Colombian food, and wish you could eat it on a regular basis but are unsure of how to cook it, then you need this book to help you along. You will not be disappointed.
This cookbook is super well written, and I love that she is able to provide authentic Colombian recipes integrated with common substitutes for ingredients if you don't have regular access to an international food market. My husband is from Colombia, and he was so surprised I was able to make some of his childhood dishes without his help :)
My sister married a man from Colombia and has struggled to recreate foods from his childhood. This cookbook has given her the confidence to cook for her mother in law as well as other family members. Written in English with hints about possible ingredient substitutions, this cookbook will be much appreciated.
Bought this to look through. Have a bunch of Colombian recipes saved on my computer, but it is good to have a whole cookbook to peruse. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but think they will be good. For now, I'm just reading it (as I do most of my cookbooks!)
