An Instant Modern Classic – Indispensable Storytelling Gold

Bottom line, this is amongst my TOP FIVE BOOKS ON STORYCRAFT – and, yes, I've read them all. It includes hundreds of brilliant, actionable, *true* insights, techniques, and principles to guide the professional storyteller through what is really some of the hardest work in the world to do well. It's also a total blast to read. I review my copious highlighting in it before every new book I write. Buy and read this now, thank me at leisure. (The photo by the way, was twittorial documentation of me reviewing *just the very, very, very good stuff*, before doing the hardest creative work of my life – namely, writing the 1/3-million-word climax & conclusion to a 6-year, 16-book, 1.6-million-word series – in order to put the most fundamental story principles at the very forefront of my brain, when I needed them most urgently.)

A great way to analyse and strengthen stories
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 15 February 2021Verified Purchase
This book breaks down storytelling, going through topics such as concept, characters, structure, dialogue, etc, to really analyse what makes a story engaging and irresistible. While the examples are largely from the world of film, the techniques are equally suitable to novels etc, and gives concrete advice on how to improve the story and the way it is told. Easy to get through, with clear headings to break the main points down, I'm finding it invaluable as I work on my novel and try to ensure that I really am telling the best story in the best way.

One Of The Best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 28 May 2019Verified Purchase
There's a medium-sized industry now trying to help people to create novels, stage plays and screenplays that other people will want to read or see. In terms of instruction books alone there must be well over a hundred in print, with more being published all the time. Indeed, it seems to me to be very difficult for the would-be teachers to say anything fresh. But Matt Bird has succeeded in doing so, and I class his book as one of the three or four most interesting, instructive and useful that I've read. His book is up there alongside Robert McKee's, Syd Field's and Blake Snyder's as far as I'm concerned.

An outstanding achievement…

This book doesn’t belong in the book case beside all your other screenwriting books.
While you are waiting for it to arrive, build yourself an environment proof gold plated shrine in your basement and then buy some of those special gloves they use in museums to handle priceless artefacts. When people ask to borrow it, and they will, throw them out of your house and never talk to them again.
In this saturated market, it’s very rare to get a book that sets itself so far apart from the rest.
And yet here it is, a book that will fundamentally change the way you look at Story.

The mentor you have always wanted
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 2 December 2016Verified Purchase
I have followed Matt's blog for the last couple years, and he is the mentor you have always wanted.
Honest, clear, concise, and totally anti-guru, it's for anyone looking to learn. And yes, ANYONE can learn to write. It's hard but it is doable, no talent required, just elbow grease and an understanding of the actualities of the craft.
I have no doubt that this will eventually become an absolute must-read, it is far beyond any writing book I have ever read before.
Anyway, I have to read it again, and take notes again -- because every sentence is a nugget and I can't miss a singe thing.
