Product description

About the Author

Shelby Mahurin grew up on a small farm in rural Indiana, where sticks became wands and cows became dragons. Her rampant imagination didn’t fade with age, so she continues to play make-believe every day—with words now instead of cows. When not writing, Shelby watches The Office and reads voraciously. She still lives near that childhood farm with her very tall husband and semiferal children. Serpent & Dove is her debut novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magic overriding your emotions ❤️
By bookmonk._ on 14 June 2020
A WITCH & A WITCH HUNTER BOUND IN HOLY MATRIMONY, THERE WAS ONLY ONE WAY SUCH A STORY COULD END A STAKE AND A MATCH.
"You're to be my wife." Catching up to her in two strides, I reached out to grab her arm, but stopped short of touching her. "That means you'll obey me."Does it?" She raised her brows, still grinning. I suppose that means you'll honor and protect me, then? If we're adhering to the dusty old roles of your patriarchy?"I shortened my pace to match hers. "Yes."She clapped her hands together. "Excellent. At least this will be entertaining. I have many enemies."
Serpent and dove written by @shelbymahurin ,a 2019 YA romantic fantasy fiction revolves around a witch, Louise le blanc and a witch hunter,Reid diggory. Louise has fled from her coven and took shelter in the city of cesarine forsaking all magic and is stealing for livelihood, her life takes a dramatic turn when an unforeseen event Leads to her getting married to Reid diggory,a chasseur sworn to church, they aren't meant to be together yet when fate plays a cruel game, Louise has to choose between love and Life. I have always been a huge fan of fantasy fiction and as I was devouring page after page of serpent &dove, I fell in love with the lucid and dreamy writing, the bold and beautiful Lou, the precise and pious Reid, daring and dauntless Coco, it was like a movie unfolding before me, I have never quite enjoyed a YA romantic fantasy fiction as much as I did Serpent and dove, its not just a love story,it's the story of survival, resilience, faith and the fact that love conquers all. Anxiously waiting for the second book, blood & honey, for another Ride full of Fun,adventure and hopefully a happy ending(I have always been a fan of tragic endings since it makes love more meaningful yet I don't want to take chances for this book I might just have a myocardial infarction).Keeping my fingers crossed for more magic to fill my existence.Thank you for such a gem of a book

By Priyanka on 13 October 2019
If in 2019 you are going to pick up a single book, let it be this. Seriously. I forgot sleeping eating breathing everything as soon as i read the first page. The characters are so so freaking interesting, and you will FALL IN LOVE with Louisa. You will. Mark my words. The author has done such a great job on her debut book, i am definitely looking forward for her future work. Loved this one

4.0 out of 5 stars Book Review.
By AroobaQamar on 18 August 2021
“There are some things that can’t be changed with words.”
- Serpent & Dove.

I picked this book right after i read another fantasy book. I was so indulged in fantasy so I picked another one.

The first half of the book was slow no doubt but the second half had my mind blown. It was so unexpected and the best part was how the book ends, in a way that I couldn’t keep my hands off of the second book.

The story starts with Louise running, hiding and in search of a ring that might keep her safe and hidden. When she’s about to be caught she uses the ring to escape and eventually runs into Reid.
The events take turns and they are left to no choice other than getting married.

Reid, a Chasseur married to Lou, a witch.
Chasseurs are known to hate witches. They kill / hunt them.
Witches, scared of Chasseurs.
And now they are married.

A perfect tale of enemy to lovers, although i feel it all happened too fast.

Great writing and narration.💯
Even though the book was slow in the start but the second half was definitely worth the wait!!🙌🏻
It’s a ⭐️ 3.8/5 ⭐️ for me.

Favourite quotes from the book:
• “Undiluted by indecision,he saw the world in black and white, suffering none of the messy, charcoal colours in between.
The colours of ash and smoke. Of fear and doubt.
The colours of me.”
• “Only God can read the depths of our soul.”
• “Love makes fools of us all, darling.”
• “Perhaps, but a wounded animal is a dangerous beast.”

4.0 out of 5 stars Gostei bastante
Reviewed in Brazil on 14 October 2019

I didn't make it through the first chapter, so I'm not going to be rude and give it 1 star simply because it isn't to my taste. I don't trust reviewers who do that.

However, seasoned readers should probably beware.

I was immediately drawn to this book based on numerous targeted ads.

The plot sounded fantastic. Great cover art. Character names that weren't otherworldly levels of obnoxious (I'm looking at you, Clary).

So, I gave it a shot. Instantly purchased, even though I already have oh-so-many books sitting at home unread.

I cracked this open less than an hour ago, and decided that I can't bring myself to continue.

I don't consider myself an ABSOLUTE snob. I understand no book is perfect. I just want to be transported!

Why did I stop reading this quickly, I hear all two of you asking?

Simple:

The editor on this book failed.

FAILED.

Seriously, worst editor EVER.

Here are the references to a smile/mouth/laughter in the first few pages alone as a descriptor:

Page 4 (the equivalent of the second page, as it begins on page 3):

"I couldn't help but grin."
"Smirked."
"I cackled."

Page 5:

"She pouted."
"Grinning."

Page 6:
"Chuckling."
"Whose lips twitched in an effort not to grin."
"Saccharine smile."
"Forcing a grin."
"Lips curling upward."

(There was also a "winked conspiratorially" which implies a smile yet again.)

Page 8:

"A wide smile."
"She grinned like a cat with cream."

Page 9:

"An alluring smile."

Page 10:

"An evil smile split his face."
"Andre bared his teeth."

(This is where I tapped out, but I'll continue through the first chapter just for your benefit.)

Page 11:

"Babette cast the two a small smile."
"Their grins vanished."

Page 12:

"Licking his lips nervously."
"With gleeful smirks."

Page 13:
"Her smile grew small and cruel."
"Smothering a snort."
"Shook with silent laughter."

Page 14:
"His mouth twisted."

Page 16:
"I could almost see her smile. It matched my own."

Phew!

Now, maybe I'm just too sensitive and that's really not that bad. But, keep in mind that 1) I probably missed some and 2) this is a fairly easy read, so the repetitiveness of descriptors feels fairly unrelenting.

If this were the only issue, I probably wouldn't have said anything. But poor editing becomes even more clear through other examples.

For instance:
"Babette glared at us." And then, just a couple short sentences later on the same page: "He glared at her for several long seconds." I don't think it was intended repetition to mirror Babette, but rather, they didn't realize that "glared" was already used above. And if it was an intentional glare, it should have been more obvious like "he matched her glare" or something, to make the two pointedly linked.

Similarly, the word "however" is used at least a few times within the first chapter.

References to "stupid" or idiot/idiocy, also several times in the first chapter.

It may very well be a book with a wonderful plot and full, developed characters - it certainly seemed like it had the potential to be interesting. However, I was so thoroughly taken out of it by the way certain phrasings and descriptors were overused that I decided it wasn't worth it. It felt rough, unpolished, and amateurish in this regard.

If you are not sensitive to cliches in word choices and repetition, you may love this book! I'm not saying don't give it a try - it may just be a "me" issue.

But, to the editor...and author, for that matter...please enter future novels into one of those "overused words" analysis websites online before beginning edits.

No one needs to read the word "grin" six times in one chapter alone.

Digo e repito: Shelby Mahurin, conte comigo pra tudo!
