The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
NEW YORK TRIBUNE
BY PRIYA AMRIT
MARCH 2, 2017
Film legend and ’60s It Girl Evelyn Hugo has just announced that she will auction off 12 of her most memorable gowns through Christie’s to raise money for breast cancer research.
At the age of 79, Hugo has long been an icon of glamour and elegance. She is known for a personal style both sensual and restrained, and many of Hugo’s most famous looks are considered touchstones of the fashion and Hollywood archives.
Those looking to own a piece of Hugo history will be intrigued not only by the gowns themselves but also by the context in which they were worn. Included in the sale will be the emerald-green Miranda La Conda that Hugo wore to the 1959 Academy Awards, the violet soufflé and organdy scoop-neck she donned at the premiere of Anna Karenina in 1962, and the navy-blue silk Michael Maddax that she was wearing in 1982 when she won her Oscar for All for Us.
Hugo has weathered her share of Hollywood scandals, not the least of which being her seven marriages, including her decades-long relationship with film producer Harry Cameron. The two Hollywood insiders shared a daughter, Connor Cameron, who is no doubt the influence for the auction. Ms. Cameron passed away last year from breast cancer soon after turning 41.
Born Evelyn Elena Herrera in 1938, the daughter of Cuban immigrants, Hugo grew up in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City. By 1955, she had made her way to Hollywood, gone blond, and been rechristened Evelyn Hugo. Almost overnight, Hugo became a member of the Hollywood elite. She remained in the spotlight for more than three decades before retiring in the late ’80s and marrying financier Robert Jamison, older brother of three-time Oscar-winning actress Celia St. James. Now widowed from her seventh husband, Hugo resides in Manhattan.
Preternaturally beautiful and a paragon of glamour and daring sexuality, Hugo has long been a source of fascination for moviegoers the world over. This auction is expected to raise upward of $2 million. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Review
Praise for The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo:
“Riveting, heart-wrenching, and full of Old Hollywood glamour, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is one of the most captivating reads of 2017.” ― Buzzfeed
"A novel of Old Hollywood that's simultaneously gossipy and poignant. Look no further for the glamour, ambition and shocking secrets your beach-blanket sessions demand." ― People
“Come for the glam old Hollywood vibes; stay for a touching tale of a young reporter and a silver-screen legend.” ― Cosmopolitan
"In her mesmerizing tale, Taylor Jenkins Reid explores Hollywood’s heyday with a heroine akin to Elizabeth Taylor. Movie icon Evelyn Hugo, now a recluse at 79, unfurls the story of her glamorous life and her scandalous seven marriages." ― Us Weekly
“The epic adventures Evelyn creates over the course of a lifetime will leave every female reader mesmerized. This wildly addictive journey of a reclusive Hollywood starlet and her tumultuous Tinseltown journey comes with unexpected twists and the most satisfying of drama.” ― PopSugar
“If you're looking for a book to take on holiday this summer, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has got all the glitz and glamour to make it a perfect beach read — as long as you're prepared to cry off all your sunscreen, because this book gets *emotional*. Each of Evelyn's marriages comes with its own hurt and heartbreak, from infidelity and betrayal to domestic abuse. But running throughout Evelyn's tumultuous life is one great love that will leave you sobbing into the pages.” ― Bustle
“The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is more than escapism fiction sweeping its audience back to an era when show biz glamour danced with real-life intrigue, romantic entanglements and perceived impropriety. With memorable characters rivaling any Hollywood blockbuster, Taylor Jenkins Reid marries themes of loyalty, betrayal, friendship and love into a soaring, fast-paced and gripping performance. It leaves readers asking if they are merely role-playing with those they love or being true to an authentic self.” ― Shelf Awareness, starred review
"[The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo] is fascinating, emotional and will be hard to put down. For fans of Taylor Jenkins Reid, this is her best work yet." ― Associated Press
"A spellbinding novel about love, glamour and the price of fame." -- Emily Giffin, New York Times bestselling author of First Comes Love
"In her latest mesmerizing tale, Reid transports readers back to Hollywood’s heyday with a heroine in the likes of — but more intriguing than — Elizabeth Taylor, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Katherine Hepburn. Yes, Evelyn Hugo is the glamorous idol you admire, but she’s also the relentless fighter you aspire to be. Her life’s story is heartbreaking, yet beautiful and will keep readers captivated until the very last page." -- Jamie Blynn, Us Weekly --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Recommended read for fiction readers. It's a life mystery, no crime or thriller.. It sails through the life of a struggling actor who later becomes The Evelyn Hugo. How she discovers herself and succumbs to trying that her story be heard and understood in it's pure sense..Its full of emotional u-turns! Could not put this one down!

I bought this book after seeing it blow up all over the bookish community. To say it was brilliant would be a gross understatement. Evelyn Hugo had my complete attention from start to finish. She isn't a black and white
character and that's what makes her memorable. I really enjoyed the experience of reading it. A solid 5 star read which has made it not only to my top favourites of the year but has become a favorite for life. I will undoubtedly read this book again cause Evelyn Hugo leaves you wanting more.
Completely unrelated but I wish the paperback copy wasn't so expensive because this is a book I will love to adorn my shelves.

What do I say about this woman now? In the novel, she's someone who always leaves you desiring for more. And in reality, she leaves you feeling the same way. How? Because she's fictional and you'd so wish she wasn't. You'd wish she were here (or at least used to be), that her experiences were just as real as that heart throbbing inside you, that her movies had really been made and could be watched instantly after you finished reading the book! But alas... she is imaginary and that sucks. 'Cause she's one of the most alluring, intriguing, inspirational, and beautiful women that could ever be.
No, she wasn't perfect. But then that is not what being powerfully independent means anyway, is it?

Well, this book deserves more than just five stars. Maybe seven stars? ;) Haha

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was one of my favourite books of 2018. It centres on the life and times of Evelyn Hugo – an award winning movie star – and it charts her way to success; the good times, the bad times and the times when life was so hard it was unbearable. Not only does Taylor Jenkins Reid take you on an emotional rollercoaster of a journey through Evelyn’s life but she also looks at the hypocrisy of Hollywood during its golden age, it looks at the LGBT community and its rise to prominence and it looks behind the screen at the lives of Hollywood actresses – the parts that they don’t want us to see.
This is the first book that I have read by Taylor Jenkins Reid but it certainly won’t be the last.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is available now.

A surprising Hollywood tale
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 July 2019Verified Purchase
This is a book which surprised me.
I was expecting a lurid tale of glamorous people in old Hollywood. You know the kind of thing: sex, betrayal, drug abuse and maybe an untimely death or two. Okay, a lot of that is in here, but what I actually took away was a touching love story. There’s a real heart to this novel, one that loves its central characters and as such tells a story which isn’t just about film stars behaving badly, but instead seemingly real people and a distinctly real feeling relationship.
Obviously owing a debt to VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (which really is a book about film stars behaving badly), we follow ultra-gorgeous actress Evelyn Hugo as she makes her way from Hell’s Kitchen hopeful to one of the world’s most beloved and sought after stars, while at the same time working her way through a Liz Taylor-eqsue seven husbands. But who is the real love of her life?
If I have a criticism, it’s that this book doesn’t feel like it belongs to real Hollywood. All the movie stars at its centre are fake movie stars, which given its fiction is understandable, but all the people they bump into are fake movie stars as well. There is virtually no reference to the real contemporaries a character that Evelyn would have had. No passing allusions to a Monroe or a Hepburn. As such it feels like it takes place in a parallel universe, one with a completely different set of stars, and because of that it lacks a certain tactility.
But I forgive it that as its heart is in the right place and its love story rings true and in the end it’s hard not to be moved by it.

Not for me this one, I was looking for something a little lighter to read, lighter is what I got! Just a very vapid tale about a shallow bunch of people. I didn't like either of the central characters, they had nothing interesting to say. Life, loss, regret - maybe so but these characters are so one dimensional nothing has any deep meaning or emotional content that truly hits. At times I found the narrative to be somewhat juvenile, ultimately just horribly superficial trying to be meaningful. No plot surprises at all just cliches.

This book deserves ALL of the hype and then some!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 March 2019Verified Purchase
I kept seeing this book pop up everywhere and everyone is loving it, so, even though it is not my usual type of story, i jumped in without reading the blurb.
This book deserves ALL of the hype and then some!!
I cannot recommend this book of perfection enough, honestly, it is just so beautiful.
Evelyn Hugo is an icon to a lot of people, she was the style icon for women and men around the world, Women wanted to look like her, and men wanted to bed her, and lots did.
She was Hollywood's 50's glamour girl, a movie star, a sex symbol - think Marilyn Monroe / Jayne Mansfield / Elizabeth Taylor.
When budding journalist Monique gets a call at work for her to visit Evelyn, well she jumps at the chance just like anyone would.
The request is for Monique... JUST Monique, but why her?
Deciding that she wants Monique to write her memoirs, Evelyn then tells us the story of her rise in Hollywood, and the thing that everyone wants to know, out of her 7 husbands, who was the greatest love of her life?
This gets answered in spades and we learn a hell of a lot about Evelyn, sometimes, not so good things about her.
We learn about her using her strengths *cough* Boobs *cough* to get herself ahead in the business, we learn about her actually falling in love and who with, we learn about an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love.
We learn that, even though Hollywood is this glamorous place that we all seem to view through rose tinted glasses, it actually is a place that strips you of your own self, your heritage, your name, even the people who you are "supposed" to be in love with.
Oh how I cried reading/listening to this, by the time you have read to near the end of the book, Evelyn feels like a real person, i even googled her because i thought that she was an old Hollywood actress (spoiler, she isn't)
🎧🎧 - Narrated by the always wonderful Julia Whelan and 2 new-to-me narrators Alma Cuervo and Robin Miles, this was one of the best books i have listened to in a long long time.
If you really want to read something that is going to become a best BEST seller, and i have absolutely no doubt a movie for sure, then you should pick up this stunning piece of gorgeousness

easy read—and it was
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 November 2017Verified Purchase
I expected this to be an enjoyable, easy read—and it was, but there was also a lot more to it than I had expected to find. I thought I had the twist predicted from the start, and I did and I didn't, so while the ending didn't come as a surprise, the importance of Monique to Evelyn was not at all what I had seen coming. I would mention that I found it a little jarring every time I was pulled back into Monique's story and the husband plotline felt a little irrelevant (if it was supposed to serve as a parallel to Evelyn's stories, it sort of fell flat) and, rather, I found the most engaging parts of the narrative to be those of Evelyn's life. There's a lot of different things crammed into this book and, in general, I think certain sensitive subjects were handled fairly well. Overall, this book exceeded my expectations and made for a thoroughly gripping read.
