This first book by author Brashares is wonderful. I can hardly wait to read the sequel that is now out. Although it is catagorized as YA/teen, I found it a marvelous read. It is one of the better written books I have read in awhile. Too bad this kind of writing wasn't available when I was a youth. The voice of each of the four girls is unique and lets the reader inside. The girls experience life on their own for the first time. The pants are the link to their friendships. Each brings something unique to the group. A great coming of age book that I believe is more realistic to the majority than not. A fresh approach by a fresh storyteller. I do believe most readers from 12 on will enjoy this book.
While serving as a Fulbright scholar in Saratov Russia, my colleague in the department of foreign languages at the Saratov Pedagogical Institute read the "Pants" and decided it would be an excellent book for teacher education students to study with us for practice in English comprehension. We didn't read all of the book with the class, but we did read the Prologue, all the letters, and the Epilogue. Young women in Russia who are going to be teachers loved the story and were very interested in what would happen in the future to the 4 girls. It was exciting to see a story that has been popular in the US transfer to people in another country. This is in many ways a timeless story about girls beginning to become adults, and how friendships can help pave the way for this painful process. I recommend it without reserve.!
I found this book by accident. I was looking for a book to buy for a family member. She's 14 and the customer service person at the bookstore recommended I buy this one. She said it's pretty popular amongst teens and some adults which peaked my interest.
It wasn't until after I gave this book as a gift did I decide to purchase the 3 series myself on Amazon.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. At first I thought this book to be a little juvenile with the whole sharing of pants thing but as the story went on, it peaked my interest on the relationships the girls developed not just with themselves but with their families, love, etc... I understood that the pants represented some symbolism and was the thread that connected their friendship through their trials and tribulations.
I enjoyed this book so much I read the 2nd book right away and I'm about to read the 3rd.
Although I'm 31, this book really took me back to when I was a teen and the struggles I faced as I came of age.
Ann Brashares really captures the characters well. Highly recommend reading this book. You can't put it down.
Finally there is an honest and heart-warming (without being too over the top politically correct) story for young adult readers. The element of "magic" provides just enough of a hook to link the four young women we meet in this story. The premise is simple: A pair of thrift store jeans see four young women through an adventurous summer apart. As the pants travel the world, we see four girls (Carmen, Tibby, Lena, and Bridget)and the drama that unfolds in each of their lives. Their stories are powerful, intelligent, and moving. This is no Babysitter's Club- The Pants will leave you wanting more with tears in your eyes. Read it!
I read this as paperback first before i got my kindle, since i got my kindle i have been checking back every single day hoping that kindle had released the 'non audible' version of sisterhood of the travelling pants. I am a big fan of the movie, but I was never a reading kind of person, so I decided to start with the sisterhood. I loved it, all of the sisterhood books (excluding 3 willows which i haven't read yet). No matter what age you are, you will be able to enjoy this book. My favourite part was being able to make such a real connection to the characters, they are very real in the sense of their personalities. My favourite sister is Lena, mostly cause of her romance with costas which was just dreamy. Bridgets story was quite dark, so if you have a younger child you may want to read this book with them, just to help them understand better. So even though i have read all of the sisterhood books, I just wanted them on my kindle so i could have them close by because the stories are just so beautiful and real. LOVE THE SISTERHOOD!!!
