Secondly:the books ... Yes, they are lightweight with lots of unrealistic technology and has ghosts (sorry, couldn't resist) of Farscape and Firefly (background idea) and Stargate Atlantis and The Matrix (the robo-squids) and Star Wars (both elements)
The writing style is very good, well crafted and well edited
The characters are rounded and sympathetic. It doesn't take long to care about the little green hacker, the two big, tough ex-warriors who are in love, the feline sexpot ninja assassin and the amazing, evolving android that make up the crew of the 'Ghost' captained by the only human outside the blockaded Solar System (for our protection).
The banter between the crew is amusing with Wil's use of human vernacular continually baffling everyone he meets. In return the hundreds of alien species in the cosmopolitan galaxy puzzle him as well! The ship itself is well imagined, the adventures and scrapes they get into (and out of) are quite exciting.
I also like how the chapter titles hint at but don't spoil the actual chapter story - we know they will win in the end - it's a series after all!
In reply to the comment about being derivative: there are only 3 (or 5) stories to tell. It's how you tell them that counts. If robo-squids and droids along with fighter planes in space and FTL drives are good enough for SGA and The Matrix and Star Wars, then why can't they be used in a different story? Flash Gordon started the whole human (and his sidekicks) leave Earth and save the universe from evil - surely you can't believe that because it's been told once it can't be told again!
Summary: good stories, well crafted, great characters, light and humorous with instances of funny. I'll certainly be reading any other stories John Wilker chooses to write about the Ghost and its crew
Some reviewers have commented on text errors from lack of proof reading, yes, there are a few (not as many as in many E books) but in every case I have been able to easily understand the meaning from context and they haven't taken away from my enjoyment of the book. I wouldn't even have mentioned them is some reviewers hadn't been so disparaging.
I'm about 75% of the way through at the time of writing and definitely plan to buy the next in the series.
It's a light hearted read, has a good storyline and isn't too predictable.
Enjoyed the books and will buy the next in the series.
