The adventures of a motley crew of characters fighting battles in a galaxy far, far away. This is the stuff of many sci-fi authors, but in these three books the story and concept are handled well, with snappy dialogue and almost believable scenarios. The individual aliens work as well, and I did enjoy reading the three-book omnibus. My problem is the writing. There are far too many typos, grammatical errors and mistakes of punctuation, all of which should have been picked up during a copy-edit. In fact, I doubt if a copy-editor ever saw the book because there are so many glaring mistakes. Would I read another of his books? Yes, because he can tell a good story, but I really hope the author reads a book on basic English grammar before he leaps into print again.
You have to suspend disbelief when reading most Sci fi so please do that if you read this. Space ships wont really behave like jet fighters, it's unlikely that communication and understanding will be instant and easy... not to mention same atmosphere, food, beer...and sex. Overall, an easy read, wont get you thinking or keep you awake at night but I enjoyed it as a light read. Not sure where the author intends to go next, as the intentions of the hero aren't really clear; if it's just more 'adventures' then I'll leave the rest of the series to a younger audience.
I'm loving the characters and story more each book and cannot wait to read the next one as soon as I finish this review. There are some mistakes here and there but they are just bumps in the road of a good story. The last short story has the worst editing. Despite the many small mistakes I really enjoyed this boxset. Cheers!
Well here I am in Corona London lockdown and I discover John Wilker and Space Rogues. Thank you John, thank you, thank you, thank you. Immensely readable, engaging and fun, turn page, turn page, not good for going to sleep at a decent hour but otherwise top notch. Criticisms ? Want to reach out to a more international readership, loosen your US cultural references, even to this centuries old Anglo-Saxon they can get a bit tedious.
This is a lot of fun. While not being cutting edge hard Sci-fi it is a light hearted Space Opera that delivers many a chortle. It borrows quite heavily from sources like Star wars and Guardians of the Galaxy but does it with a twinkle in its eye and many a knowing smile. If you want to be entertained and escape from a miserable wet weekend then the crew of the Ghost will whisk you far,far away.
First couple of pages I’m thinking cheap buck rogers with shades of the Marx brothers. Bit simplistic. I was completely wrong, once it got through the initial intro to the characters it was light hearted but also some deep meanings. Exactly how you would expect an earthling to act. Read all three book within 4 days couldn’t put them down. Now eagerly awaiting the next book.
"Fun fast science fiction for fans of Farscape, or Guardians of the Galaxy." sets the bar high, at least for me. The similarities to GotG both in initial setup and sense of humour made me uncomfortable to start with but once the author has established the set-up, it's ok. The discomfort fades as Wilker's characters become people and his plots and sub-plots develop (there are several, not as predictable as you might think). I feel I'm damning with faint praise but I'm trying to be accurate - I truly did enjoy this more than I thought I would and I am about to buy more in the series for that reason. It's worth the money, especially as the volumes are a good length.
I like the sequence of events, the plot and the light hearted events. That people had to die to create those events are the stories of life. I like hero stories, and this set is worth reading. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.
Nice easy, enjoyable, fun, read. Light with some interesting plot twists, and likeable characters. Good to sink into and get away from it all for a bit. A good space adventure escape. Almost a vacation without leaving home. Well done - thanks.
