Beginning readers will practice the -ot sound in this easy-to-read addition to the Splat series. Splat the Cat and the Hotshot is a Level One I Can Read book, which means it's perfect for children learning to sound out words and sentences.

First off, while it's not official BSA it has a fine Boy Scout look and feel. Second, it is well written in terms of vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure and clarity, so it's fine as a reading teaching tool.
But best of all it has an engaging underlying message that feels authentic and upbeat. It doesn't wander off into any odd tone or questionable message. Here, Splat meets a new hotshot Scout, Scott, who seems great at everything. Splat isn't jealous or envious; he admires Scott. But when Scott messes up, Splat is there to help him. The story emphasizes teamwork and self-respect and friendship, without a single odd turn.
Sometimes these books for younger readers have poorly thought out messages that leave me confused or underwhelmed. This book hit a clear and upbeat high note on every page, so I was more than happy with my choice. This will be a hit with all of my Scouts.
