About the Author

Cixin Liu is China's #1 SF writer and author of The Three-Body Problem – the first ever translated novel to win a Hugo Award. Prior to becoming a writer, Liu worked as an engineer in a power plant in Yangquan.

Joel Martinsen is the translator of The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu and (with Alice Xin Liu) of The Problem With Me, a collection of essays by Han Han. His translations of short fiction have appeared in Pathlight, Chutzpah, and Words Without Borders. He lives in Beijing.

Liu Cixin, born in June 1963, is a representative of the new generation of Chinese science fiction authors and recognized as a leading voice in Chinese science fiction. He was awarded the China Galaxy Science Fiction Award for eight consecutive years, from 1999 to 2006 and again in 2010. His representative work The Three-body Problem is the BEST STORY of 2015 Hugo Awards, the 3rd of 2015 Campbell Award finalists, and nominee of 2015 Nebulas Award.

His works have received wide acclaim on account of their powerful atmosphere and brilliant imagination. Liu Cixin's stories successfully combine the exceedingly ephemeral with hard reality, all the while focussing on revealing the essence and aesthetics of science. He has endeavoured to create a distinctly Chinese style of science fiction. Liu Cixin is a member of the China Writers' Association and the Shanxi Writers' Association.

Very interesting start, the society will change unimaginably... great premise! But the plausibility from there on constantly remains near the zero mark. Very disappointing from such a classy writer. I really struggled to stay interested after the kids embarked on “playing”. Finished the book out of respect for the writer -am a huge fan of Cixin Liu’s work but his last two books (Ball Lightning) and this one, both serious disappointments. How can the same writer come up with a masterpiece like Wages of Humanity and then this stuff? Puzzling.

I am a fan of Liu Cixin (or Cixin Liu?). I've read several of his books and really enjoyed them. This one, not at all. I abandoned it 2/3 of the way through. I assume you know the premise: a supernova nearby effectively kills everyone over the age of 13 on the planet. I simply cannot accept that any child speaks the way these ones do. Heck, most adults don't act, think or speak at such an intellectual level as these children. There are also several weird issues where the author seems to have forgotten what he wrote. For example, Thing X has been thrown off the planet. Later, a large issue this that certain children want to use Thing X. No mention that it is no longer available. Quite the opposite, this demand is a serious issue. This kind of poor continuity really annoys me. But mostly I find the dialogue stiff to the point of absurdity and therefore I don't like or believe in any of the characters. I say this as a big fan of the Three Body Problem and Ball Lightning. Sorry, this one was not for me.

I bought this on the strength of Cixin's wonderful 'Dark Forest' trilogy..... but this fails on many levels. It starts with an intriguing idea but thereafter the plot-holes are glaring: Antarctica is abandoned due to climatic change - the author seems to have overlooked the radioactive fallout from the two nukes; he also omits the obvious point that in a very short time many of these kids would have been faced with the twin obstacles of puberty and the approach of young adulthood - producing raging hormones and a very different outlook in the 'elders' to that of the younger children. He's also much too optimistic about the ability of poorly-prepared children to troubleshoot sophisticated technology. The ending is poor too - it has a contrived, rushed, feel - as if the writer wanted just to be done with it (in the notes he says the novel had been gestating for over twenty years).
As an exploration of childhood 'in vitro' it compares poorly with, say, Lord of the Flies'

In the words of the author's last sentence …"the story told in this novel is fairly unremarkable.", which just about sums it up. The scenario is a little different but not unique, the book ranges through time as do many of Cixin Liu's other books but this one doesn't get anywhere interesting. By the end of the book I found myself scanning pages just to reach the end.
