This is an interesting read. Susan Sontang talks about her personal life in the book. Her take on different authors and an interesting section on her illness when she was diagnosed with Cancer. In fact her views on Disease/Illness have a Foucaultian angle.
An unexpected find for me. I am a novice to her writing, so have no particular baggage to leave around and explode. She is certainly a thinker. Love that. This was the appeal. An ordinary thinker as well. A rare creature in a confusing world, and American. Something of a diary about her encounters, yet a depth of cross reference, in books read and culture experienced. I enjoyed her truth in the fact of illness. been there done that myself! I did note others comments here and rase an eye brow at the high brow, I have to say! good solid writer informed only by her experiences both in the physical and the mental diologe of an intellect! Good read!
Susan Sontag was not only a great mind and outstanding intellectual person but also an entertaining and challenging discourse partner in any type of conversation. The Complete Rolling Stone Interview from 1978 are still nowadays a rewarding book. Thanks to the Yale University Press for a superb edition.
