The Lady is a Thief
Years ago, Owen Renderwell earned acclaim-and a title-for the dashing rescue of a kidnapped duchess. But only a select few knew that Scotland Yard's most famous detective was working alongside London's most infamous thief...and his criminally brilliant daughter, Charlotte Walker.
Lottie was like no other woman in Victorian England. She challenged him. She dazzled him. She questioned everything he believed and everything he was, and he has never wanted anyone more. And then he lost her.
Now a private detective on the trail of a murderer, Owen has stormed back into Lottie's life. She knows that no matter what they may pretend, he will always be a man of the law and she a criminal. Yet whenever he's near, Owen has a way of making things complicated...and long for a future that can never be theirs.

Review
"The author manages to surprise the reader time and again...This is worth a read..." - Kirkus
"[T]he leads' blend of cleverness and stubbornness makes their push-pull dynamic a joy." - Publishers Weekly
"In a plot that twists, turns and surprises, Johnson has woven a compelling romance between two stubborn, endearing people. If you love smart heroines, intelligent heroes, witty dialogue and clever mystery plots, this gem of a historical romance might steal your heart." - BookPage
"From the first page, Johnson seizes readers' attention with both the intriguing mystery element and the heated romance. Losing none of her witty dialogue or clever plotting, she pulls readers this way and that as the story swiftly turns from suspense to romance and back again. Even when the pacing slows toward the middle, readers will hang on until the exciting conclusion." - RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars
"Johnson begins her new Victorian-set Thief Takers series with a bang with a richly nuanced cast of characters whom Dickens himself might envy, and an expertly crafted mystery sweetened with just the right amount of passion." - Booklist
"If you like your historical romances with a touch of suspense, strong heroines, and dashing, driven heroes, then I recommend A TALENT FOR TRICKERY. I can't wait to read the next installment in this new series. Night Owl Reviews Top Pick!" - Night Owl Review
"Setting a consistent pace from the start, the romance between Lottie and Owen unfolds with plenty of humor - at times acidic, which makes it even more fun! - and an escalating danger that discourages readers from putting down book one in The Thief-Takers series for any reason other than they've reached the end." - USA Today HEA --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

I couldn't quite take to Lottie. She was just a little too prickly. Owen was a bit too bland and not very interesting and too much of the story was centred around the same place. There just wasn't much here to grab my interest. I'll give the next book a try just in case it was only this book that wasn't exciting enough. I'll decide after that whether to give up on this series.

However, their true claim to fame has come at a cost to the Walker family, whose criminal father, Will Walker, once assisted Lord Renderwell and his team when Renderwell was working for Scotland Yard in rescuing a kidnapped duchess. Will Walker was killed while helping the duchess to escape resulting in his children, Lottie, Esther and Peter being estranged from Renderwell and his associates for 8 years.
The Thief-Takers now have their own private detective agency and they've descended in full force on the Walkers in order to attempt to find some answers in the coded books and notes Will Walker kept detailing every job he had ever worked - successes and failures. Problem is, Lottie isn't eager to help Lord Renderwell because she feels as though the Thief-Takers took all the claim to fame in the rescue of the duchess and never gave her father his due in what Lottie saw as his transformation from a thief to a rescuer of the duchess.
So, there are things to work out. It's obvious from the beginning Renderwell has a "thing" for Lottie, but will Lottie give him a chance? She's rejected every form of communication he's attempted. Lottie, who is a code breaker extraordinaire decides to work with Renderwell to find what he's looking for which gives them lots and lots of time together. In fact, I've come to realize after reading the three books in this series, this author appears to have a writing style which allows the heroes and heroines to have pretty much 75% of the storyline dedicated to the rehashing of their backgrounds and their growing relationship. This will be satisfying to those of us who find ourselves becoming frustrated when an author decides to keep the primary characters apart for much of the story. Believe me, the opposite is true of this author.
