Unfortunately, these all seem to indicate the derivative nature of the work and the author's lack of imagination, rather than evidence of clever allusions or humour.
Most of the action consists of going shopping and running away from the baddies. How the said baddies always raid premises just after the hero arrives is never explained. The hero has an amazing ship and better tech and yet the baddies have successfully subdued the species that made fleets of those ships. It doesn't quite add up. I just can't be bothered to point out all the other unexplained events or plot inconsistencies.
Finally, all the action takes place in the 'historical present' - past action described in the present tense - even when describing flashbacks. 'He pulls his gun and fires …' Not only is this not correct English, it is incredibly tedious and when the action is already repetitive it makes reading a chore.
I can't believe this series gets 5 stars.
The characters in this story are fun to read about and really come across as alive as possible. Wil Calder is a funny character, who uses references only another human would understand. He's just all round fun to read and get to know.
Bennie is almost dispicable and yet, I really loved his little personality quirks the most out of the whole crew of Ghost.
Adding a sentient robot was a good idea. Gabe is a brilliant engineer and also has a great rapport with the other crew members.
This book is a must read for space opera fans. It's fun, witty, full of action and drama, lies, and deceit. It's also very well written and very enjoyable reading. You won't be disappointed if you get this book. It's a really exciting, fast paced, humourous read. What more could you want?!
Life just gets more interesting as the crew attempt to do the right thing.
An excellent book for anyone who loves space and adventures
