PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
[A] strong debut....Cervantes fills her story with mystical possibilities-- talking with spirits, hearing what the wind whispers, gathering powerful herbs by moonlight--but also with the inescapable realities of illness, death, and mourning. The result is an imaginative yet grounded novel.

Izzy's dad died before she was born, and her mom loves her very much, but moves her around a lot. This summer, her mom is heading out to do research and Izzy is stuck visiting her grandmother for the summer. The horror!
The story continues along, unfolding prettily. There is magic in the world, and especially in the little village. Izzy wins races, learns to tell stories, and becomes a part of a community in a way she never has been before. It is not all easy or magic, and sometimes she has to grow and stretch in ways she does not expect, but it all winds up good, as we usually expect from mid-grade books.
I really liked that I could see Izzy growing up, and making decisions she wouldn't have at the start of the book.
Read if: You like magical realism. You want to read about girls who win races and learn to make tortillas. You realize that sometimes sad things happen to pretty happy kids.
Skip if: You want something more sophisticated than a mid-grade book.
Also read: Bridge to Terabithia

When Izzy is shipped off to her grandmother's village, she starts to put the pieces of her early life together - how did her father die? Is the baseball she found full of magic? Why does she hear words on the wind? Pick this up and settle in for a quiet and satisfying trip with arresting language and images that are sure to stay with you long after you close the cover.
