In the above scenario, it becomes imperative to pause and think "Are we truly present to those who need us and whom we love ?". Thich Naht Hanh, in this short book, helps us become aware of things that we have been missing. He tells us what it means to be truly present. He gently nudges us on the path of constant awareness. As he says in the book:
"The most precious gift you can give to the one you love is your true presence. Our body might be there, but our mind is somewhere else. Maybe you are lost in regrets about the past, maybe in worries about the future, or else you are preoccupied with your plans, with anger or with jealousy. And so your mind is not really there with your body. What must we do to really be there ? I would propose a very simple practice to you, the practice of mindful breathing: 'Breathing—I know that I am breathing in; breathing—I know that I am breathing out.' If you do that with a little concentration, then you will be able to really be there, because in our daily life our mind and our body are rarely together.
To be there is the first step, and recognizing the presence of the other is the second step. To love is to recognize; to be loved is to be recognized by the other. If you love someone and you continue to ignore his or her presence, this is not true love. Perhaps your intention is not to ignore this person, but the way you act, look, and speak does not manifest the desire to recognize the presence of the other. When we are loved, we wish the other to recognize our presence, and this is a very important practice. You must do whatever is necessary to be able to do this: recognize the presence of the person you love several times each day."
It is a truly a gem of a book that one ought to read (study) early in life. May you all form beautiful memories !

But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
This is a small, pocket book that can easily be read in one sitting. True to the author's style, his teachings are so profoundly simple - so simple that perhaps we have forgotten to apply them. The content illustrates and advises how to really understand Love, how to love others and (equally importantly) how to love yourself. Meditation is the underlying way forward, but you don't have to be a meditating Zen monk to understand and benefit from this book.
Like all of Thich Nhat Hanh's book I highly recommend 'True Love'
