Glad it was free, but the short story at the end - wow!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 2 March 2021Verified Purchase
The bumph was much better than the story. Written in a style attempting, presumably, to ape the work of Victorian writers such as Dickens and Conan Doyle, the prose was, in fact extremely turgid, and dragged any life out of what might otherwise have been a potentially interesting plot. Sadly, it ended up being extremely boring, which was a great shame, as the very short story attached at the end, "The Handkerchief", was written in a totally different style. It was brisk, its characters vivid, and its message a sharp reminder never to take things for granted: exceptionally good.

Short but very engaging

This is a short but very engaging book - one you will literally read in one sitting because it is so difficult to put down. It is beautifully written account of an intriguing series of events in an altruistic gentleman's club culminating in murder. There are some parallels with Conan Doyle's writing - the narrator's voice is very similar, and there is a cunning attempt to deceive which Moriarty himself would have been proud of. Highly recommended.

Short tale

A neat but clever short read. Personally, I like a slightly longer style of murder mystery, so characters have a chance to fully develop before we hit the main outcome, hence 4stars from me this time
