4.0 out of 5 starsNot the book you think it will be
Reviewed in India on 23 May 2018
I had heard about the historical Underground Railroad, so I bought this book expecting a well written historical chase story with vivid description of tradecraft, safehouse and operators.

Instead, the railroad part is turned into a literal railroad and dismissed quickly and the story focuses on the description of the horrors of slavery.

What I liked is that the book didn't attempt to be omniscient in scope. It restricts itself to narrating the core characters viewpoint which is harrowing enough. There is no hyperbole or drama or rhetoric.

One of the Amazon books that actually looked like a new book. Not dirtied or dented cover or scuffed edges.

Started reading thinking this is as a kind of atlas shrugged, instead it deals with plight of black ... slavery ... escape etc. starts slow but story gains momentum as it progresses and takes through the unfortunate times and miseries of blacks under slavery. The bravery and adventures of the lead character like wises of the real ones in real lives is thrilling. Also helps us know how disposable was a slave life.

The print of the book makes it more easy to follow the book. It is an amazing read as other reviews claim. Please do read it for it gives us a glimpse of a history that was brutal and is a lesson to humanity. This isn't a feel good one. There are separation and loss, which leads to a lot of questions. 'Why was there a need for cruelty.' ' Why is the fight for right such a difficult path?' We are given an insight to the world of Cora, a black slave who has escaped her master and is on the run through the 'underground railroad'.We travel to different states of the South of United States and get to understand racial segregation, the complex work that has been put to build the underground railroad , sacrifices made by not one but many generations in this fight for freedom and dignity. We would be left marveled as this throws in multiple aspects to slavery and racial segregation. This Pulitzer prize winning book and Manbooker short listed needs to be on everyone shelves.

Here is a book that has not kept anything hanging or guessing. Horrifying, unbelievable but true of the 1800’s. A satisfying read in its hope and completeness.
How far this race has come today!!!

This is one book that would leave an imprint in your mind for years to come. You cannot just breeze through the chapters like any other book. The feeling settles in your heart and mind as you understand the pain and suffering of African Americans at the hands of whites in the eighteen century .

I went through the chapters forever and have gone past only 100 pages in 30 days. Buy this book if you love the craft of writing and want to be mesmerized by the story of slaves and their perpetrators.

COLSON whitehead is at the top of his game, three cheers to him for all the accolades he has garnered for this gem of a book.

Shows the treacherous life the blacks in America had to go through - which to an extent, they still are living thru. Brought in as the tools for construction or cultivation and even after decades, finding it difficult to disrobe it.
An eye-opening story.

The Underground Railroad reconstructs the heart wrenching cruelty towards and exploitation of Africans who were sold to slavery in America. It is a tale of the spectacular escape of Cora from her shackled life in the plantations through the underground railroad, a marvel of engineering that portrayed the enduring role of the abolitionists in bringing civil liberties to the United States.
