About the Author
Lemony Snicket was born in a small town in which the inhabitants were suspicious and prone to riot. He now lives in the city. During his spare time he gathers evidence and is considered something of an expert by leading authorities.
From AudioFile
[Editor's Note: The follwing is a combined review with THE BAD BEGINNING.]--The three Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, have recently joined the world of children's literature made hospitable by a wizard named Harry. Their miserable lives, an unrelenting series of catastrophes, have become the source of grins and giggles among elementary and middle-grade readers. And who better to read the serialized melodrama than the multitalented Tim Curry, master of multiple voices and deadpan delivery? Fabulously funny, the first two volumes afford Curry, as the deeply sorrowful, omniscient narrator, an opportunity to display his enormous talents--in Mr. Poe's chronic, wheezing cough; Sunny's squawking, incomprehensible gibberish; Count Olaf's sinister and malevolent arch villainy; and Uncle Monty's lisp. An added bonus on The Bad Beginning is a wildly funny interview between Leonard Marcus and Daniel Handler (who is actually suspected to be the author, Lemony Snicket!) that will have kids longing for more. To extend the fun, each audiobook is decked out with an appropriate theme song by the Gothic Archies. Listeners should be prepared to settle in for some serious frivolity! T.B. I think this book is excellent. It is really easy to read and enjoyable. You learn new words on every page and the meanings of the words are part of the writing. But it was all very sad so if you don't like sad books don't read this one.

The book picks up exactly where the first one left.
Yet again, the tone & writing of Lemony does the charm again, keeps you on the edge. It's difficult to put down the book once started.
If I compare with the part 1, this one lacks a bit of thriller, but since it's a series of some 13 books, and thriller alone can't build up the story, it's okay.
I love the book dedication part!
It reads
"for Beatrice - my love for you shall live forever. You however, didn't"
PS: i read on kindle so i can't comment on quality of paperback .

A pleasant pastime not only for kids!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 June 2019Verified Purchase
This book series caught my attention because of the Netflix series with Neil Patrick Harris. And as I usually like reading the original books before watching a movie / series, I gave this one a try.
It is quite entertaining and very easy and fast to read. I really enjoy the lecture especially after a long and stressful working day (so far I have read books 1 - 6). This book series is just something you can switch your head off and can read it through without the need to concentrate too much. The way Lemony Snicket writes is very easy to follow and just makes you keep reading, even though the events in the book are predictable.
Also the illustrations by beginning of every chapter in the Kindle version are a welcome change!
The only thing I do not like is the patronising way to explain 'difficult' words - of course those stories were written for children but even then I don't think that that much explanation is actually needed.

A Series of Unfortunate Events is my favourite series on Netflix
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 June 2018Verified Purchase
A Series of Unfortunate Events is my favourite series on Netflix, so a few months ago I decided I was finally going to buy the books and read the whole series, and I don't regret that decision.
The Reptile Room is the second book in the series and is much better than the Netflix series.
The book opens with Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire on their way to live with their uncle, Dr Montgomery Montgomery, a semi-successful herpetologist with a large collection of reptiles.
Dr Montgomery's assistant, Gustav, left him without any notice just before the Baudelaire orphans arrive, and his replacement, Stephano is strangely like Count Olaf.
The thing I love about The Reptile Room is the dark humour running throughout it. There are constant jokes that are definitely not aimed towards children which make it such a fun book to read.
It's funny, sad and entertaining all at the same time and I really do wish I'd have read it when I was younger because it's just the ideal book for me.

Amazing!

I chose this rating because I liked the way it had slight humour but Snicket kept onto the fact that pretty much the whole content of the story was misery. I also liked the way everything flowed nicely and everything made sense.

This book is an extremely imaginative and incredible story, one which I have enjoyed an inordinate amount. It is very descriptive and I am very grateful to my brother for suggesting it to me! Even though the story is about unfortunate children, it is not one where you feel so sorry for them that you have to put the book down. It is more of one where you can hardly put the book down, and where you can read on with vigorous enthusiasm. Thank you Lemony Snicket!
