This was my first Becky Albertali book, and I'm so, so glad I picked this gem of a book up :) it's just such a cute novel, that I'm currently grinning from ear to ear even thinking about it. 😁🙈
The lead protagonist, Molly, was such a relatable and hilarious character; I'd give this book a whole damn galaxy of stars if I could, for the diversity of contained in it, & mainly for how well it handled the whole scenario of melange!
This book not only gives you all the feels when your feelings went unrequited (yeah, we've all been there 😂💔), but it adds up a whole new level of plot to it by focusing on not just Molly's love life, but also the family aspect, which I feel is widely ignored in the YA genre lately.
The Upside of Unrequited will make you swoon, laugh, cry and cuddle, all in the span of 300 pages; the author's narrative is really impreßive as to how real the characters feel. Can't WAIT to read her future literary works!
Loads of love for this book! 💙

Where do I even begin with this book? I loved everything, from the characters to the writing style to EVERYTHING. The characters in this book are all so diverse and the diversity is really well-done, too.
All in all, this is a perfect light-hearted contemporary read and I loved this a lot.

Another hilarious yet touching read by Becky Albertalli. I could totally relate to the protagonist, not because I too am on the heavier side, but because she was so believable.

I like how the characters were realistic and believable but the plot wasn’t good. Everything. Literally all of the protagonist’s self worth depended on getting a boyfriend. It was a lil sad

This book is crush number twenty eight!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 February 2018Verified Purchase
Reading this book was really surreal. Have you ever read a book and felt as though it was written just for you? That's what this felt like for me. I've felt like Molly every single day of my life growing up and now isn't that much different. I have serious body confidence issues, I'm anxious, self-doubting and really introverted. Reading about Molly took me right back to being an insecure teenager, to all those unrequited crushes, the feelings of not knowing who I was or where I belonged, feeling like the very last person in the race when it came to first kisses, boyfriends and all the stuff that follows.
Thankfully, when I was 17 I met my very own Tolkien obsessed, adorably geeky Reid-type and I'm also really close with my sister (much more so now than we were as kids).
I love this author's work. The way she perfectly encapsulates a character and makes them relatable to you, makes you invest in them and care about what they're going through. On that note, if you haven't read Simon vs The Homosapien's Agenda, you really really should, especially before you read this.
I love how she supports and advocates for the LGTBQ+ community in all of her work. It's refreshing, realistic and just pure awesome!!
I can't wait to read the next book in the series when it comes out and I know Molly and her story are going to stick with me for a very long time to come.
Did I mention that I love this story??

For the first few chapters, this was a borderline 2/3 star read. Molly's head was hard to get into, and the first quarter of the book felt like so much repetition about how badly she wanted a boyfriend. I understand that the whole plot is about her love life, but I think a balance of that would have been nice.
Then we get to about halfway through the book - particularly the scene where Reid and Molly are in the rain and Reid sweeps her hair back. This was the turning point in the novel for me - I about melted into a pile of mush! After that it was just straight adorableness.
Was it totally predictable and a little cliche? Yes. But it felt like such a realistic rendition of teen angst that it was perfect to me. Every move Molly made through her jealous arc made me simultaneously roll my eyes in frustration while at the same time relating so hard.
I don't think Molly and Cassie's troubles were completely resolved, however. It felt like they'd just slapped a bandage on it and called it a day, but despite this, Reid and Molly's relationship overshadowed all the instances that could have made me drop my rating.
Also, I see a lot of reviews (particularly the unfavourable ones) talking about how it took Molly's crush returning her feelings for her to love herself, and how that's Bad For Feminism™. But personally, I feel that there *are* people who need others to love them for them to see their worth, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Some people need that outside reassurance, because (for whatever VALID reason) they can't trust their own judgement.
The scene where Molly feels beautiful, personally, translated to me as her seeing herself happy made her feel relaxed and not self-conscious or alone - all the things that made her insecure in the past. When I do something good, it makes me feel good, which translates to me feeling like I *look* good. The fact that it was Reid making her happy honestly felt like a coincidence, not a causation. But that's just me!
Anyway, I digress. All in all, a fantastic read.

17 year old Molly has had over 25 crushes. Is it time for her to finally act on her feelings?
Why did I pick this book up?
Because Becky Albertalli wrote it.
Did I enjoy it?
I loved it. Easily one of my favourite books so far this year. Cute and fluffy but with a good dose of feels. Molly was extremely relateable and owned up to her flaws. Upside was funny and believable and I just sped through it. All the side characters were fantastic as well. If one of the characters said something problematic it was addressed on the page and the pacing was spot on.
How could I use it in my teaching?
I’d love to be able to work it in somehow, perhaps as part of a body confidence lesson. I’ll definitely be recommending it to my older students for pleasure reading.
Did I learn something?
I learnt about being a twin, a little about being Jewish and the importance of self acceptance.
Did it have good representation?
It did. It had lesbian characters, and on the page bisexual and pansexual characters. There was a minor gay character and Mina is American Korean. Molly also suffers with anxiety, but it’s just part of her character, not a plot device. Molly is also fat and deals with her thoughts on that. AND, her family is Jewish.
Anything else?
If Becky Albertalli isn’t on your instabuy list, she should be.

Insightful story warmly told
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 September 2019Verified Purchase
This was a feelgood story with a cast of diverse characters and issues pragmatically portrayed. I found it more a story of the change in dynamics between twin sisters growing up than of unrequited love; it is difficult to elaborate without giving away spoilers but I was never convinced by Molly's supposed feelings for one boy while there was never much doubt about the outcome of the other developing relationship. Her quandary was more about wanting to stay in the same peer group as her sister. The unrequited love element to the story was largely historical. The elements I enjoyed most were the comforting solidarity of the crafting sessions with her family and friends, the quirky references to Elizabeth I and a hilarious trip to a supermarket.

Ok, so I don't quite get how this happened, but Molly is basically me! She is literally me! The way she thinks the way she feels, the way she speaks she's just me! And Reid?! He's basically my perfect guy! (We're totally ignoring the 20 year age gap here though!) Words cannot explain how perfect this book was for me right now! I needed Molly in my life right now. Just perfect!
