I was eagerly looking forward to this book. I must say it met and surpassed my expectations. The characters in this series are among the most compelling I have ever come across in any book.

It's great to have a protagonist and an antagonist who could switch sides so easily. Both Victor and Eli were excellently written and they feel very consistent with who they were in the first book. The other characters are also fully fleshed out.

The tension that the author creates as the book approaches its climax was palpable. It reminded me of the first book. Overall, this book is a worthy sequel to Vicious and concludes the story.

Vengeful is a quickly paced and tense superhero-ish thriller. The characters I had loved in Vicious were back and it was great to follow their lives once more. And even more importantly, a character that I did not care for at all is back too and I... somehow ended up - while not exactly like - sympathising and empathising with them, which is a bloody great accomplishment from Schwab's end. I think I liked Vicious more than this (I finished that in one sitting after all), but if you liked it at all, you should definitely read this.

This was one of my favorite reads of this year without a doubt. The dance of vengeance between Victor Vale and Eli Ever continues in this much awaited sequel. With the narrative jumping between multiple timelines we see how things unfolded for our favorite villains in the five years that have passed since their face-off at the end of Vicious. Things aren’t looking great. Eli is imprisoned and Victor is the one on an EO hunting spree. My, how the tables have turned. Victor, Sydney and Mitch have formed an unconventional family of sorts and in this tale of murder and mayhem, those heartwarming moments are the ones that stand out. Eli’s backstory is revealed which is heartbreaking and throws light on why he turned out the way he did. New EOs are brought into the mix. We are introduced to born again Marcella Riggins who will either rule or ruin the city of Merit with her new-found ability. She does terrible things and yet I found myself relating to her on more than one occasion. Meanwhile Detective Stell and his team have been busy trying to figure out how to neutralize EOs. In the end who will prevail?

Victoria Schwab’s Villains series is definitely a series I would recommend if you like stories involving complex antiheroes. This isn’t a story of good versus bad. This is bad versus worse. Devil and the deep sea and all that. There are heroes who do monstrous deeds for their cause and villains who show their humane side when you least expect it. You will find yourself siding with one or the other as the story unfolds. It is a battle of ideologies and it is fascinating.

Note: While this appears to be the end of the series, the author has left some plot points open to carry the story forward if she chooses to do so. I, for one, certainly hope she does.

With a manhunt for her capture is underway, she decides to leverage the two most wanted EOs instead. Merit City has a war brewing as these three powerful EOs do battle but a malicious hidden figure has come up with a way to suppress their abilities. Will he show his hand before it's too late or will his meddling cause even further damage?

Will Marcella be able to turn over Eli and Victor in exchange for her freedom or will all three of them finally pay the ultimate price for their crimes and duplicitousness?

I was hooked instantly while reading Vicious but the introduction of Marcella between Eli and Victor added depth to the story, new and thrilling action and a chance for all their characters to develop which showed their true motivations. Victor was darker in this one. I felt this was spurred on by his fear of death which made him take risks and questionable actions. Sydney was still his conscience in this story and I loved how her story arc progressed. The finale left me holding my breath to the last page. I look forward to reading more in this series.

I have such confused feelings about this one, I've no idea where I'd rate it, at times I hated it, and really enjoyed other parts, so I'm settling for a middle of the road 3 stars.

I really like the idea of EO's and was excited to see what happens with Mr Vale after the events of the last book. But honestly, I just did not like him in this book. He was boring and completely unlikeable, speaking to everyone like crap and seemed to have lost the charming edge that made him endearing in the first book.

June just was Mystique minus the blue, and I couldn't get past that because it then just started to feel like it was ripping off elements of X-men. Marcella I just wasn't interested in and found my mind drifting whenever she was around.

I think possibly my biggest problem is there never really feels like there is true peril. With Sydney's ability to resurrect the dead, it just feels like it doesn't actually matter if anyone dies because there are more than likely going to come back. That led to the sense of me not caring for most of the book.

Will I read the third book....probably, but I also kind of wish I'd just left it at book one and read it as a standalone.

This book takes a long time to get going. The first quarter in particular is very slow and not that interesting. All the characters and the threads do come together by the end and the end is quite good, but some moments leading up to it are not that interesting. It took over twenty per cent of the book to even introduce Eli back into the story, I did not even realise he was going to being in it until then. Marcella is introduced right at the start, but does not reappear for so long that I had forgotten her name.
The world that Schwab has created it very good and her take on superheroes is very interesting. I really love all the interesting powers that they have, especially Marcella's. If feel like if this book started out a bit more fast paced I would have enjoyed it.

This is the second book in the Villains series. This is an adult science-fiction, which is bloody and action packed! Following on from the events of Vicious, Victor Vale has returned from the dead, but is having issues with his power – and he’s becoming dead again. His enemy Eli, is entombed in prison, experimented on by sadistic scientists, and biding his time. When new EO Marcella emerges, Victor and Eli are set to collide again… This was a really interesting sequel. I loved the characters Marcella and June – they were distinct and fiery, Marcella especially. I do feel like Victor and Eli take a back step for this novel, almost like it isn’t their tale anymore. This book is as dark as the first, but I still love the concept of who is a villain, what makes a villain, what can or cannot be done with these extraordinary abilities…The writing was smooth, and I loved it. I was pulled back into Victor and Eli’s world and I loved my time here. It had a satisfying ending, but as I said, I feel like Victor and Eli take a back seat. For that reason, I rated this 4 stars.

Okay, let's take a deep breath before I start to gush about how much I love Schwab and her villains. If you follow Victoria of social media, you may be aware that she scrapped the initial draft and started from scratch. An inspiration if ever I did hear one. The plot, the pacing, the characters, everything is just spot on, and all of a sudden we've gone form a lovely self-contained novel to a carefully controlled sprawling world populated with these intensely realistic characters, who just so happen to have superpowers. The whole thing just made me insanely happy (despite the broken heart) and I do not regret getting two copies one little bit.
