Extremely well researched book, with details of social life, weapons and traditions included. The story line a little banal/repetitive at a couple of points but generally an excellent read and reference book.
This is too brief a history to rank alongside Gwyn Jones as a definitive history of the Vikings. There are a couple of hosting innaccuracies, and it fails to complement the historical writings with the archaeology. That said it romps through the era in a readable fashion.
It opened up a part of history I was only vaguely aware of.In school at the Netherlands we were told that our ancesters were terrorised by the Vikings This book was an eye opener to me and I enjoyed it very much.sweis brouwer
Really good viking history. It shows different aspects of vikings, from the most famous/notorious pirate images to merchants, farmers, explorers or even slave owners. Quite interesting. Bought this book before my Nordic trip, definitely helped.
