A Wonderful Book Full Of Humour And Wit
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 March 2021Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series and was looking forward to Colins story. I wasn’t, however expecting to be totally and completely enthralled by it. I know that “I couldn’t put it down” is such a cliche, but in this case it was only too true and I really did read it from start to finish in just two sittings.
I totally fell in love with Colin and thought Minerva was his perfect match. Colin had a desperately sad and emotional story hidden in his past and there are phobias and fears that he is unable to face. He is a handsome rake, totally charming and incredibly charismatic. Minerva is a bluestocking, very clever, a geologist and doubts she will ever marry.
They undertake a journey to Edinburgh together so that Minerva can make a presentation at the Scottish Geological Society. The whole trip is an absolute joy - there are setbacks at every turn and Colin charms their way out of them with tall tales and many hidden talents, while Minerva slowly comes out of her shell and becomes confident and self assured. There is a sizzling attraction between them from the start.
This is a wonderfully witty book, numerous laugh out loud moments and definitely has a feel good factor. Tessa Dare can not write books like this quick enough for me. Please keep them coming.

Collin is a man considered disreputable by Minerva, but as a lord her mama thinks he would make a perfect husband, but Minerva knows he would be all wrong for her sister, and since she needs to travel to Scotland and requires an escort, she decides to kill two birds with one stone. In an attempt to keep Collin away from her sister and gain the aid she needs, she offers Collin money to escort her to the conference she needs to attend.
The glimpse I saw of Minerva in ‘Surrender of a Siren’, had me thinking I wouldn’t like her, but I’m happy to say that my attitude towards her changed as soon as I started reading this book. When I was introduced to her as a secondary character, I had a feeling she would be too annoying to have her own book focused on her, it turns out that that assumption was incorrect because she was overall a lovely heroine. Her differences from what a lady is expected to be endeared her to me, just like they did Collin.
Minerva’s mother in this at the start came of as somewhat mean, I’m referring to how she referred to Minerva in her letters, letters she would get said daughter to write! In ‘Do you want to start a scandal’, Minerva’s mother comes across far better (at least for me).
I liked the fact that each adventure/experience Collin and Minerva had helped reveal another contour of their characters, showing that one should never judge a book by it’s cover. Polite society may wish to see Minerva as an unladylike bluestocking and Collin as a rake, but that is only one facet of who they are. The escapades were amusing and I liked how Collin appreciated Minerva's intelligence.
I’m really liking that fact that reading the books in this series of out of order doesn’t in anyway dampen my enjoyment of the characters and stories been told. The dual POV that the author uses helps ensure an entertaining read.
Dare infused this story with wit, charm and tongue in check humour, making it a lovely fluffy HR read, one that will be staying on my kindle.

Wildly wicked and witty
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 August 2017Verified Purchase
My first Tessa Dare, and it certainly won't be my last. I really enjoyed this. It was witty and it was pacey, the hero and heroine were perfect foils for each other and I loved Minerva in particular. I do love a clever heroine, and I am particularly fond of a heroine who has to fight for her place in a man's world. I noticed that Ms Dare thanked Ada Lovelace, Byron's mathematician daughter, who presumably helped inspire Minerva, and I then loved Minerva even more, because Ada inspired one of my own heroines, mathematician Cressie. But that's by the way for this review.
From the moment the book opened, it romped along at a brilliant pace. The repartee was witty, the characters believable, and though I wasn't particularly sold on the concept of Spindle Cove itself, it was kind of irrelevant, because they didn't spend much time there. I loved the stories they spun as they travelled north, and I loved how their blatant sexual chemistry (which sizzled) didn't blind them to each other's faults, and didn't drive them towards their HEA - so although the sex was wild and wicked, it was also kind of irrelevant (to them, not to the book) because what they wanted and what they thought they could never have was a true meeting of minds. So when they did get that - wow, what a satisfying ending.
One other 'character' I loved was Francine, the cast of the foot of a dinosaur (I forget which one, but it was named in the author note). Although I knew from the start that it would be impossible for Minerva to present her theory, never mind win the prize she thought, it didn't stop me rooting for her right up until the end. If only! But you can only play around with history so much, and I thought Ms Dare took it to just the right limit.
Really great book, and I will definitely be reading the next in this series.

Could be my new favourite...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 April 2012Verified Purchase
I read this book the second I had finished the first book in the series,
A Night to Surrender
, and I stayed up till 4 in the morning reading this book in one sitting, it was completely non-puta-downable. Everything about this book is good. The characters are beautifully flawed and extremely human (despite both being extremely attractive) and the building love trust and dependenrcy between them was both believable and extremely moving.
Minivera Highwood is a scientist. Having found the discovery of a lifetime she wants to go to Scotland to present it the the Royal Geological Society of Scotland, she has a plan not only to get herself to scotland, but also a way to got the annoing Colin Payne away from the beautiful good and delicate older sister Diana. Colin Payne is a very endearing viscount who after a traumatic and fatal carridge accident when he was a child does not travel in closed carridges, does not travel at night, and does not/ can not sleep alone. He also has a habit of causing explosions, both literaly and figurative where ever he goes, but yet has a rule never to ruin an innocent woman, which if he goes to Scotland with Minivera will undoubtedly happen. However despite all this, he finds himself helping Minivera, and as they brave many adventures, and find themselves pushed time and time again out of their comfort zones, they start to fall in love, and realise that they are what they have always been looking for.
What I paritcually loved about this book, was there was no misunderstandings that drove Minivera and Colin apart, it is just a sweet and extremely funny story about how they fall more and more in love with each other, without being at all boring or predictable. So glad I found this book, I can see myself re-reading again and again and again.

Good, but not as good as Bram and Susanna's story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2012Verified Purchase
This is book 2 in the Spindle Cove series with Colin and Minerva.
Miss Minerva Highwood, the middle sister of the Highwood young ladies, isn't like her siblings. She has little interest in anything but geology, but is fiercely protective of her sisters. When it's believed that Colin Sandhurst, Lord Payne, will ask to marry her sister Diana, (who has a weak constitution), Minerva believes she should intervene and put a stop to things. She arrives at Rycliff Castle one night, where he's in the middle of 'entertaining.' She asks that he doesn't marry Diana. Colin is confused at this woman. With her spectacles and boots, she isn't the usual sort of woman he goes for, and keeps calling her the wrong name. Minerva isn't out off, and tells him of her plan. She has found some sort of a fossil, and wishes to show her findings to a geologist in Edinburgh she's been corresponding with. The prize is £500, which she will give to Colin, if he leaves Diana alone. But it has to look like an elopement, even though they won't actually marry. Minerva realises she will return a 'ruined woman,' but loves her sister more.
Colin is a rake and scoundrel. Eventually, he agrees to Minerva's plans, but he has his own conditions. He won't go in a carriage, and instead will ride alongside Minerva, no matter how uncomforatble the long journey to Scotland will be. Minerva is curious, and during their time together, Colin encourages her to pretend to be someone else, all in the name of fun. When they meet others along the road, Minerva is a sister, a courtesan and Colin is a long lost prince from a make believe island! They get closer, and Minerva realises she is no 'beauty,' yet little does she know that Colin finds her beautiful, unlike any woman he's ever known. He's always known her real name, but can't help but tease her a bit. She's the only one he's opened up to about his tragic childhood, and why he can't go in a carriage. Minerva also learns he cannot sleep alone, and how he started becoming a rake. But despite this, these characters both adore one another.
The story was really good. Colin is a man who needs love, and Minerva is the perfect woman for him. However, it's not as good as book 1, with Bram and Susanna. We have more from them, as well as Thorne and Kate, who are in book 3 and the ones I've been wanting to read about the most. Somehow, I think book 3 will be my favourite, followed by book 1.
