I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series and was looking forward to Colins story. I wasn’t, however expecting to be totally and completely enthralled by it. I know that “I couldn’t put it down” is such a cliche, but in this case it was only too true and I really did read it from start to finish in just two sittings. I totally fell in love with Colin and thought Minerva was his perfect match. Colin had a desperately sad and emotional story hidden in his past and there are phobias and fears that he is unable to face. He is a handsome rake, totally charming and incredibly charismatic. Minerva is a bluestocking, very clever, a geologist and doubts she will ever marry. They undertake a journey to Edinburgh together so that Minerva can make a presentation at the Scottish Geological Society. The whole trip is an absolute joy - there are setbacks at every turn and Colin charms their way out of them with tall tales and many hidden talents, while Minerva slowly comes out of her shell and becomes confident and self assured. There is a sizzling attraction between them from the start. This is a wonderfully witty book, numerous laugh out loud moments and definitely has a feel good factor. Tessa Dare can not write books like this quick enough for me. Please keep them coming.
I read this book the second I had finished the first book in the series,
A Night to Surrender
, and I stayed up till 4 in the morning reading this book in one sitting, it was completely non-puta-downable. Everything about this book is good. The characters are beautifully flawed and extremely human (despite both being extremely attractive) and the building love trust and dependenrcy between them was both believable and extremely moving. Minivera Highwood is a scientist. Having found the discovery of a lifetime she wants to go to Scotland to present it the the Royal Geological Society of Scotland, she has a plan not only to get herself to scotland, but also a way to got the annoing Colin Payne away from the beautiful good and delicate older sister Diana. Colin Payne is a very endearing viscount who after a traumatic and fatal carridge accident when he was a child does not travel in closed carridges, does not travel at night, and does not/ can not sleep alone. He also has a habit of causing explosions, both literaly and figurative where ever he goes, but yet has a rule never to ruin an innocent woman, which if he goes to Scotland with Minivera will undoubtedly happen. However despite all this, he finds himself helping Minivera, and as they brave many adventures, and find themselves pushed time and time again out of their comfort zones, they start to fall in love, and realise that they are what they have always been looking for. What I paritcually loved about this book, was there was no misunderstandings that drove Minivera and Colin apart, it is just a sweet and extremely funny story about how they fall more and more in love with each other, without being at all boring or predictable. So glad I found this book, I can see myself re-reading again and again and again.
Absolutely fantastic! I can't remember the last time I got so much pleasure from a regency romance. Every thing about this was practically perfect. I actually laughed out loud more times than I can remember at the extremely dry, witty banter and Colins outrageous' improvising ' was classic. Tessa Dare has that rare gift of writing unforced humour, it flows smoothly as does her ability to make the sexual tension and chemistry between her main characters jump of the page at you every time she puts them together - in this story that is nearly every page and it gets more and more palpable as the story progresses. The love scenes are sexy and sensual, explicit but tasteful and very romantic. Add all the above into a engaging plot and voila - what more could you ask for? The perfect love story!
I loved that Minerva was quirky, feisty and not the requisite' beautiful ' heroine but a true blue stocking and Colin I fell for hook line and sinker - what red blooded woman wouldn't. Seeing his perception of her true beauty unfolding in front of him as they progress on their journey together was truly wonderful. Enjoyed it so much have downloaded the rest of the series and intend to get lost in Spindle Cove asap. I'd been having a rest from historical romances for a while - I tend to read different genres in phases - but this story has reminded me how much I enjoyed them. How on earth though did I ever miss Tessa Dare before? Duh!
Collin and Min, what a beautiful love story both have no intention of ever marrying, in fact they did not really like each other she was a geologist he a bit of a play boy. Beautifully written characters come to life, the interaction between Collin and Min was incredible made me laugh parts made me sad.
After enjoying "A Night to Surrender" I decided to give "A Week to Be Wicked" a go - and wasnt disappointed. It is a testament to the skill of the author that she made a slightly implausible storyline (Minerva wanting to run away to Edinburgh to win a geology competition) into something believable. Ms Dare also did a convincing job of turning a scholarly, spectacle wearing spinster into a strong, desirable, independant woman. She also avoided the trap of just enslaving the hero by him glimpsing a hitherto unseen side of the heroine (et.c et.c) and had him encouraging Minerva to be herself, and in the process learning to share some of his darkest secrets. A luscious, desirable gem of a read and I shall be reading more of MS Dare's books.
I haven't been able to get into historical romances for a few years now,but I wanted a change and decided to give this author ago. Wow, is all I can say. I have to say I normally don't like funny, light, humerous reads, but this was a fantastic read. Tessa dare really bought these characters to life. The book cover says [prepare to fall in love], well that's exactly what I did with these two characters. Ill definitely be trying more of this author.
I just finished this AMAZING book and i can't stop thinking about it! The characters were well described, developed and i just loved them all. Especially Collin! The story plot, and the love between the main charecters is set not too fast, but not too slow either. There were many romantic, passionate and dangerous scenes that made the book even better! I love, love, love this book and i definitely recommend it!
By the end of this book I was completely in love with Colin too. Funny, sarcastic, seductive and totally charming but with a dark side too - what a hero! Minerva was equally as endearing - well up to his tricks and absolutely his match. I lost a whole day to this book - I just could not put it down and laughed until I cried in places.
This is the first novel I've read by Tessa Dare and I'll definitely be purchasing the others in the series. I don't usually write reviews but as someone who reads a lot of romance novels this really has been a breath of fresh air. The H&H Colin and Minerva are both strong characters, Colin is very funny and creates a lot of humorous scenes in the story. How the romance develops between the two is believable, and the plot moves quite quickly with new events always happening as they travel to Edinburgh. I found it very enjoyable to read a story where the H&H don't fall out over a misunderstanding, but instead they gradually fall in love as the story progresses and they spend more time together. If you like Julia Quinn at her best you'll love this. It's romantic, funny, with never a dull moment; a definite must read for romance readers!
