Troy Howell has been writing and illustrating books for more than 25 years. His many awards and distinctions include starred reviews in Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and School Library Journal; an American Bookseller Pick of the Lists; an Educational Press Association of America Distinguished Achievement Award; and Merit Awards from the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators and the New York Society of Illustrators.

Richard Jones was born in Coventry, in the West Midlands and grew up in Leamington Spa, UK. After three years of painting, film making and art history at college he moved down to Devon, UK to study Illustration. After graduating, he worked in a busy city library for almost 15 years. He now writes and illustrates full time.

Born in Warwickshire, Richard Jones has been living and working in Devon for over 20 years.

After graduating with a first class degree in Graphic Design and Illustration, he stayed on a little longer to complete a PhD.

His illustrated books include; The Child of Dreams by Irena Brignull with Walker Books. Our Planet, The One Place We All Call Home, by Matt Whyman with Harper Collins and The Proper Way To Meet a Hedgehog and Other How-To Poems, edited by Paul Janeczko with Candlewick and Walker Books.

His picture book The Snow Lion, by Jim Helmore, published in 2017 with Simon and Schuster and has been published in 20 languages.

He has written and illustrated three picture books of his own, Perdu (2020), Little Bear (2021) and Where Have You Been, Little Cat? (August 2022)

Absolutely lovely book, genuinely one of the best picture books I’ve seen in ages. Beautiful, moving story on the theme of discovering how to be your authentic self, even if you don’t initially know how to get there. I purchased it for a 3 year old but I think it would be suitable for quite a wide age range, probably 2-7, as children of different ages will take different things from it. The illustrations are gorgeous, remind me a bit of L.S Lowry. The only slight criticism is that I feel the choice of paper is a bit flimsy for a picture book, it would be quite easy for a younger child to tear.

We may be slogging forth in our day-to-day existence, oblivious to our binds or actively endeavoring to leap up and 'find our place' in this world. To celebrate the self-actualization and homecoming is joyous for the reader.

The artwork simply lovely and perfect for the story. Restful tones yet with clever details. I love the fold out page (up she goes!) - children are sure to love that added touch.

I have already purchased several to give as gifts to friends with young children/having babies. I know this book will become a beloved bedtime story and hold a special place on their shelves.

This is a delightful story about a whale named Wednesday who lives in a fishbowl at the center of a busy city. She does not belong there, but it is the only home she has ever known. She sees a patch of glorious blue in the distance and her heart is drawn to see it again. She gathers her strength and courage to leap. It is the beginning of a new life for her. A life where she belongs.
Troy Howell (author) has captured what is in the heart of so many of us. A longing to be where we should be even when we don't yet know where that may be. Richard Jones (illustrator) has beautifully illustrated this lovely story and has added his own personal touch of "Digger the dog" finding a forever home.
We cheer for Wednesday as she makes her final leap (and this book has that wonderful page that lifts up just at the right moment)! We are thankful for young girl Piper and her wisdom. We watch as Digger finds a family. And we rejoice when Wednesday is welcomed by someone just like her in the middle of the sea.
This book will be cherished by the young and old and everyone in between.
