What Lives in the Woods is my third read from author Lindsay Currie. I absolutely loved Peculiar Incident on Shady Street and Scritch Scratch and couldn't wait to read this one. Happily, it was another great read. Twelve year old Ginny Anderson is looking forward to spending her summer sleeping in and attending a writing workshop with her best friend. When her parents surprise her brother and her with a month long vacation in Michigan while her father researches and develops plans for the mansion he has been hired to renovate, she is less than thrilled to say the least, especially when spooky things start happening. The story had the perfect amount of scary happenings and thrills to chill the reader. I did wish there was less sibling rivalry. Even though the characters come together in the later part of the story to solve the mystery, it gets old when authors throw in the cliché of siblings who can't get along. Not all siblings can't stand to be together. I think I'm just a little touchy about this after reading multiple middle grade books this year with this theme. I'm curious if there will be a sequel to this one. There was definitely an opening left that could be explored in a later book. Overall, it was a great read, but the previous two remain my favorites. Lindsay Currie is a solid, auto-buy author, for this reader!

When Dad recieves an offer he can't refuse ($$$) to help reimagine Woodmoor Mansion into a party and event space, Ginny, Leo and Mom all move from Chicago to Saugatuck, Michigan for a month during summer vacation.

Ginny, a huge Agatha Christie fan, immediately has her own notions about what mysteries or haunted tales will be uncovered during their one-month stay at Woodmoor.

Shortly after moving in Ginny hears her name called, a constant ticking sound and encounters a moving mannequin. Ginny she enlists the help of her brother Leo and new best friend, Will, to solve the mystery surrounding the house. The deeper the trio delve into their quest additional unexplainable events occur including a typewriter that transcribes messages from an unseen force and shadow people.

Kids will love following the trio as they try to solve the mystery before the month is up and if dad will be able to help the townspeople overcome their fears to visit and see the beauty that exists at Woodmoor.

Fans of Lindsay Currie's Scritch Scratch and The Peculiar Incident on Shady Street, Mary Downing Hahn and Betty Ren Wright will love this book.

Lindsay Currie has captured my heart with her writing style. I knew I was onto something with her books after reading Scritch Scratch, and What Lives in the Woods solidified all of my fan hood for her first book! Currie's style is perfect for her target audience. It's quick hitting, incredibly easy to digest, and she serves up round characters who show heart and a semblance of growth throughout the story!

What Lives follows Ginny and her family who travel out to Woodmoor Manor in Michigan, so that Dad can do some work restoring the house. Ginny quickly finds out that her new vacation home is haunted, and she begins a spooky adventure to uncover clues as to what's really lurking behind the shadows in Woodmoor Manor.

I love that the main character, Ginny wants to be a mystery writer. She has an affinity for Agatha Christie novels and I can't help but think I was reading about a young Lindsay Currie.

Both titles I've read from Currie have hit me in all the right spots in my middle grade loving heart and I can't recommend her books enough! Five stars from me!

Lindsay Currie has done it again- she cannot write a bad book. Admittedly, I am a native Michigander so I was thrilled to see the setting move north, but even with that aside, I still very much enjoyed this book. I loved the underlying mystery present throughout the story. Definitely a good start for readers who may want to turn to Christie herself one day! There were some pretty chilling moments, but nothing that should be over the top for middle grade readers.
